Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - Saturday 17 December 2022: Silvermine West - End of year picnic

Hi Everyone!

Sing along to the tune of 12 Days of Christmas:

On the 17th December
My trail friends said to me...
Runners are a-running :)
Walkers are a-walking :)
Picnic is a-happ'ning -
'Coz the run is ON!!!

Parking at the dam,
Bring mince pies, coffee, other treats
And a bev'rage with some alcohol!

(Round of applause if you sang that aloud!)

Start time is 7.20 latest - allow for queues at the entrance and remember that there is no signal. In case you miss us, familiarise yourself with the path from the dam to Elephant's Eye cave/Tokai lookout - we'll be starting along that route.

I can't say where the exact picnic spot will be as this is wind dependent, but we'll be there! Family members are most welcome to join us.

Hi Trailers!

Saturday 17th December sees us meet for our last official sortie of 2022. We'll run one of our old Silvermine favourites, Three Lookouts and a Peak, and celebrate the year's finale with a picnic brunch and a swim in the dam, weather permitting.

Route

Starting at the car park nearest to the dam*, we'll head towards the fire lookout over Tokai, meander towards Blackburn lookout and complete the circular route via Noordhoek Peak to the Noordhoek lookout. There are options to include the Panorama path, the Crassula Path, divert to Elephant's Eye Cave and/or extend the distance with a jog down the River Walk. We'll organize group leaders and sweeps on the day.

Rendezvous and Start Time

The main gate - the one with the SANParks checkpoint - opens at 7am so please make your way to the car park at the dam* as quickly as possible.
We'll start running as soon as possible - latest 7:20am.
NB: There is no cellphone signal in Silvermine so if you are running late, there is no way to let us know. Don't be late!

Entry fee to Silvermine is still amazing value at R38 per adult. Please bring your ID book to prove you are a SA national. Alternatively, buy a MyGreen card at the Tokai SANParks office this week, or carry your Wild card.

Terrain and Distance

Single track, jeep track, and a little bit of rock hopping. Depending on the group you join and the whim of the day, you'll run somewhere between 8 and 12km.

Groups

We will organise groups on the day. There will definitely be a "Lorraine's speed" group, hopefully a faster group and possibly a walking group. All to be confirmed on Friday.

Please bring:

A whistle, WATER, a warm & waterproof/windproof top, space blanket and ICE (In  Case of Emergency) tag or card.

If you're staying for a Christmas picnic, please bring a cooler box with your favourite snacks and cool drinks. Invite your home family to join you and meet your trail family!

Unfortunately we do not welcome dogs on our runs.

See you there!

Subject: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - SATURDAY 26 November 2022: Silvermine West: NB Entry fee R38 cash/My Green Card/Wildcard

Hi Trailers

Next Saturday the UTCT 160km run takes over every mountain in Cape Town, except Cape Point and the North. As some of the trailers will be helping with marshalling, I decided that the far North and South options wouldn't work. I've crafted a route in Silvermine West that allows us to run and also to see and support some of the 160km runners.

A walking group will be confirmed on Friday

Route

We enter at Gate 1 (dam side) and park immediately to the left of the entry hut. From there we take the jeep track to the left (aware of the race runners going across to Silvermine East crossing), passing the entrance to the river walk until we come to the cairn marking the single track to the right. We follow this single track, keeping right and then left at the cairn till we hit the jeep track coming down from Noordhoek peak. We turn left and run until the single track marking the entrance to Crassula/Amphitheatre path on the right. We run the Crassula path until we get to the jeep track. Again we need to be careful of the race runners. We turn right and run down the jeep track turning off to the dam (optional deviation down the jeep track to Elephant's Eye and Steenberg Ridge) and take the river walk back to the cars. (I can't tell from the map if UTCT runners take the River Walk – if they do, we'll take an alternative option back)

Rendezvous and start time

Officially the gate opens at 7am. Please come early so we can start running at 7h20. There is no mobile reception so we won't know if you're late.

Terrain & Distance

The route a combination of jeep track and single track.

The route is around 11km with added kilometres to Elephant's Eye and possibly Steenberg ridge – 14km

What to bring

Water, whistlea space blanket and your ICE information. Please remember your entry fee of R38 cash plus your ID /MyGreenCard/Wildcard!

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof/warm gear.

Please note that TMT unfortunately does not allow dogs on its runs.

  • Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • If you are not well, please stay at home

Warning:  Trail running is inherently more dangerous than road running.  It takes place over uneven hazard strewn trails in exposed and often remote terrain where help is not always readily available.

Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk as although the organizers take reasonable precautions to ensure runner safety, it cannot be guaranteed.  To this end neither the Club nor the organisers personally can be held liable for any claims relating to inter alia, injuries, disabilities and death. Further any minor child participating in any trail running activity will be deemed to be doing so with the consent of his or her guardian.

By starting out on a trail run you explicitly acknowledge that: 1] you understand the associated risks involved and accept full responsibility for your own safety. 2] you are medically and physically fit to participate and 3] are carrying the necessary water, clothing and safety equipment required for the particular run.
