Hi Trailers,

I hope you are all looking forward to another 4 day week!

Route
This week we'll start from the main parking in Silvermine (Gate 1) and start our run on a downhill as we hit the Old Wagon Road before crossing the road and returning up the Silvermine valley via the Sunbird Centre.
The longer, faster group may add a few extra kms to the end of their run with a jog up the River Walk. Or something like that!

Rendezvous and Start Time
RV at the Silvermine Gate 1 Parking area.  The gate only opens at 8 am, so we will try to start close to 8.15 am.
Remember that there is no signal up at Silvermine so please don't be late! You won't be able to call us to say 'Wait for me!"

How to get there?
Drive up Ou Kaapse Weg from the Constantia Valley side, over the top and right into the entrance to Silvermine North West (the dam side).
Don't forget to bring your Wildcard, MyGreen card or R42 entry fee.

Terrain and Distance.
A good downhill along the Wagon Trail to the Sunbird centre then a gradual climb up the valley on the other side.

Groups
Final groups to be confirmed on Friday, but there will definitely be a 'Sweepers' group led by me.
Walkers group to be confirmed on Friday

What to bring

Water, whistle, warm, wind or waterproof top depending on weather

NB
Covid not really relevant to us outdoors any more, but please don't come if you are sick.

Sorry - no dogs allowed on VOB runs

See you there!

Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: Saturday 23 April'22 - 3 Blockhouses Run

Good afternoon all.

Our run tomorrow is ON.

Looks like a cool 13 degree start to the day with a bit of breeze.

There may not be a fast group and will not be any walkers this time.

I realized that this week is the one year anniversary of the devastating fires around Devils Peak, UCT and Rhodes Memorial. In homage to that I'm going to slightly adjust our starting route to include a small detour down and through Rhodes Mem and up past the gutted tea garden cottage.

There is apparently another trail event starting from Newlands at 06h30 so I suggest you get there as early as you can to secure a parking spot around the main area. Sip a takeaway coffee while you wait.

We will still start at 06h45

To: <tmtrailers@googlegroups.com>

Hi Trailers.

We return to an oldie but goodie by tagging the 3 blockhouses. Not too difficult this weekend with a nice shortish, sharp loop. I personally have not been on the 'city' side since the awful fire so it will be interesting to see the flora now.

Route (see attached map)
We meet at Newlands Forest parking - off Union Avenue (M3). Please try and arrive early as the parking gets very full

From the parking we turn right and run along the jeep track just above Rhodes memorial, we turn left at the intersection at the bottom and then turn right along the path to the Prince of Wales Blockhouse.

Returning to the track, we turn right and carry on, taking the left fork and the zig zags till we see the single track to the left that goes up to the Queen's Blockhouse.

We pass through the blockhouse taking the single track on the other side up to the track that takes us up to the King's Blockhouse

From the King's Blockhouse there are various options to get back to the parking depending on distance and time. (dotted lines on map). We will probably run the boardwalks and take the downhill left just after the picnic table.

Rendezvous and start time
Meet at 0
6h30 at Newlands Forest parking. We start running at 06h45 this time due to the later sunrise.

Terrain and distance
Degraded jeep track and single track. Flowing undulating running, short uphill to the king's blockhouse

The route is around 9/10km but there are options to add distance on the way back

Groups

I will lead a Medium paced group.

Faster and Relaxed Group will be confirmed later in the week.

What to bring

Water, whistlea space blanket, and your ICE information. The weather can be different on the mountain. Please come prepared for wind, mist, or extreme heat!

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof/warm gear/lots of water.

Please note that TMT unfortunately does not allow dogs on its runs.

Please be aware that our runs operate under strict COVID protocols even though now on level 1.

  • No gathering in a big group at the start or end of the run
  • Practice social distancing
  • Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: CONFIRMATION OF WEEKEND RUN

Hi Everyone

Sorry this is late.  Someone was playing golf this morning.

Tomorrow's run is ON.

Many people will be out at Paarl tomorrow so we are on skeleton staff.

There will be no official Relaxed Group.

Peter will be leading a Walking group.

Weather will be clear, starting at a cool 13° rising to 21°later in the day.  Strong south-easter.

See you tomorrow.

A very runnable route but with a surprising amount of total elevation.

Route

We park at Constantia Nek and take the higher route over to Cecilia Forest.  Then contour path to Window Gorge.  At this point the shorter option will split off right and head down to the jeep track in Kirstenbosch.

The main group will keep left and head over the Aloes (rock scree) and down to the big rock on the contour path.  Here we turn right and run down the steps to the jeep track.  Turn onto the cycle path and pick up the jeep track on the other side of it.  Then it is jeep track all the way through the top of Kirstenbosch and Cecilia Forest (lower route) to Constantia Nek.

Saturday's weather is looking cool, starting at 14 degrees but climbing 25 degrees later in the day.  A brisk south-easter is forecast but we will be running largely in the wind-shadow of the mountain.

Rendezvous and start time

Park at Constantia Nek by 6h15am ready to start at 6:30 am. Please arrive early – parking fills up fast.

Terrain & Distance

The route out starts with about 3km of jeep track followed by single track all the way to the border of Newlands Forest.  One big climb.  On the way back 99% undulating jeep track.

The main group will be doing 14km / 15km and running time should be around 2 hours.

The shorter route is just shy of 11km and skips the big climb and running time should be around 1h30.

Distances and running times estimated.

Groups

Tim Bellairs will lead a Medium paced group.

Indications are that Grant will be available for a faster run should there be appetite.

Relaxed Group will be confirmed later in the week.

What to bring

Water, whistlea space blanket, and your ICE information. The weather can be different on the mountain. Please come prepared for wind, mist, or extreme heat!

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof/warm gear/lots of water.

Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS (K-Way VOB Medium Distance Trail Group): Saturday 9 April 2022 - Constantia Nek loop towards Newlands Forest

Hi Trailers,

After having planned a bit of a beast of run for this coming weekend, my fitness levels warned me against it so I am reverting to following in the easier footsteps of the very first K-Way VOB (although it went by a different name in those days) Trail Group run, which was about two years before TMT started up.  A very runnable route but with a surprising amount of total elevation.

Route

We park at Constantia Nek and take the higher route over to Cecilia Forest.  Then contour path to Window Gorge.  At this point the shorter option will split off right and head down to the jeep track in Kirstenbosch.

Friday 1 April 2022

Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - SATURDAY 02 APRIL 2022: THREE VALLEYS AND A VIEW OF CPT

Hi Trailers

Tomorrow's run is on. The relaxed group is confirmed.  See details below.

Lorraine will lead the relaxed group on a flatter run (*NB a run - not a walk) along the trail known as the Missing Link. You'll start at the same time and place as the longer group (Theresa Avenue). The total distance is about 10 km.
You may Whattsapp Lorraine (072 5750 914) to ensure that there is a group.

The weather is looking cool with strong winds on the mountain for tomorrow.

After a gentle flat run last Saturday, this Saturday we stretch our legs and ascend Table Mountain via Kasteelspoort, pass the Valley of the Red Gods, go through the Valley of Isolation to the top of Platteklip, run along the top of Table Mountain to Maclear's beacon, down Smuts track to the top of Skeleton Gorge, past the dams and back down Kasteelspoort.

Route

We park at Theresa Avenue in Camps Bay and go up the jeep track taking the shortcut to the base of Kasteelspoort. We climb up Kasteelspoort, turn left at the top following the path through the Valley of the Red Gods and the Valley of Isolation (with the requisite hills in between…) until we reach the junction in Echo Valley. Here we go straight up, climb the 3 ladders, turn right at the top of Platteklip, run along the top/front path to Maclear's beacon, down Smuts track to the top of Skeleton Gorge, turn right passing Hely-Hutchinson and Woodhead reservoirs. From here we make our way back to Kasteelspoort and back home. See pic below.

This is not a long route but includes a fair amount of climbing and descending.

For those who want a shorter option, turn right at the first junction in Echo Valley which will take you down to the jeep track. Turn right to make your way back to Kasteelspoort.

For those who want a longer run, a route to be decided by the group.

Saturday's weather is looking cool at 17deg with no wind.

Rendezvous and start time

Park at Theresa Avenue by 6h15am ready to start at 6:30 am. Please arrive early – parking fills up fast.

Be careful how and where you park as traffic fines are a real possibility

Terrain & Distance

The route is mainly on a single track with some jeep tracks at the start and end. The first 2km are uphill. Thereafter undulating up hills and down valleys. Downhill from Maclear's back to the start.

The stated route is around 13km, the shorter route is around 8km. (distances estimated!)

What to bring

Water, whistlea space blanket, and your ICE information. The weather can be different at the top of the mountain. Please come prepared for wind, mist, or extreme heat!

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof/warm gear/lots of water.

Directions to Theresa Avenue

From Cape Town:

Pass the entrance to the cable car and continue down Camps Bay Drive. Take the third road to the left (Fiskaal Road and follow this winding road up the mountain – it becomes Francolin Road and then Theresa Avenue. Park on the sea-side of the road facing the correct way without blocking driveways or obstructing traffic. We will start at the entrance to the Jeep Trail which is the first road (cul de sac) to the left after the road becomes Theresa Avenue

From Camps Bay/Bakoven:

Get on to Camps Bay Drive from Victoria Road, go round the left-hand hairpin bend and Fiskaal is on the right near the bus stop.

  • If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home
