TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS Next Sortie - Grootkop - Saturday 3 December

Hi Trailers

SATURDAY 3 December 2022 – Pipe track, Oudekraal, Grootkop, Woody

A known route with a twist – we will be summitting Grootkop, the difference being we will try not to get lost going up via Oudekraal Ravine.

Brief Description of the Route

From the parking area at Theresa Avenue Camps Bay, we go up to and along the scenic pipe track all the way to the end.  Instead of going up Corridoor, we will follow the faint path to the right, along and up Oudekraal, up Grootkop, and back by any number of choices to be decided on the day.

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV at Theresa Avenue at 6.20 to start running at 6.30am

Terrain and Distance

All sorts from jeep track to single track to climbs.  11km, 950m altitude gain.

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2095799

Pace Groups

There will be the normal sorting out who is in what group along the pipe track, generally a quicker group goes off the front leaving a medium pace group following.  Walkers to be confirmed on Friday.

How to get there?

Go to Theresa Avenue Camps Bay…

What to bring

Water, whistle, warm/windproof top, rain jacket - weather dependent, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.

Subject: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - SATURDAY 26 November 2022: Silvermine West: NB Entry fee R38 cash/My Green Card/Wildcard

Hi Trailers

Next Saturday the UTCT 160km run takes over every mountain in Cape Town, except Cape Point and the North. As some of the trailers will be helping with marshalling, I decided that the far North and South options wouldn't work. I've crafted a route in Silvermine West that allows us to run and also to see and support some of the 160km runners.

A walking group will be confirmed on Friday

Route

We enter at Gate 1 (dam side) and park immediately to the left of the entry hut. From there we take the jeep track to the left (aware of the race runners going across to Silvermine East crossing), passing the entrance to the river walk until we come to the cairn marking the single track to the right. We follow this single track, keeping right and then left at the cairn till we hit the jeep track coming down from Noordhoek peak. We turn left and run until the single track marking the entrance to Crassula/Amphitheatre path on the right. We run the Crassula path until we get to the jeep track. Again we need to be careful of the race runners. We turn right and run down the jeep track turning off to the dam (optional deviation down the jeep track to Elephant's Eye and Steenberg Ridge) and take the river walk back to the cars. (I can't tell from the map if UTCT runners take the River Walk – if they do, we'll take an alternative option back)

Rendezvous and start time

Officially the gate opens at 7am. Please come early so we can start running at 7h20. There is no mobile reception so we won't know if you're late.

Terrain & Distance

The route a combination of jeep track and single track.

The route is around 11km with added kilometres to Elephant's Eye and possibly Steenberg ridge – 14km

What to bring

Water, whistlea space blanket and your ICE information. Please remember your entry fee of R38 cash plus your ID /MyGreenCard/Wildcard!

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof/warm gear.

Please note that TMT unfortunately does not allow dogs on its runs.

  • Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • If you are not well, please stay at home

Monday 7 November 2022

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS Next Sortie - Sandy Bay Saturday 12 November

Morning Trailers

Our next run will be one of our most scenic routes.

Saturday 12th November, Sandy Bay circuit, anti-clockwise direction

Rendezvous and Start Time

Meet at the brick-paved parking on Eustagia Way, opposite Brunia Way Hout Bay.  Ready to start running at 6h30.  Please come 10 mins earlier to sign the register and for a run briefing

Please be aware there is limited parking, so please try and share lifts with friends, or even park away from the area and walk to the start.  Please be considerate when parking your car.

Directions

Take the Hout Bay Main Road around the circle into Victoria Road, drive thro' the robots and take the second road to the left into Edgar Road and second road on the right. Into Eustegia Way. Parking area on the left opposite Brunia Way.

Route

We will run the route in an anti-clockwise direction.

The route starts with a short uphill on the brick paved road, then down to the beach and proceed onto Llandudno .  We then backtrack to Sandy Bay, enjoy the views and head southwards along the shoreline to OudeSchip Peninsula. You can spot the shipwreck Harvest Capella (1986).   It will not be low tide, but those that want to, may be able to get closer to the rusted shipwreck on the rocks. This will then be followed by a steep climb on gabion steps to Rocket (Mitchells) Road.  Once on the gravel road, we run until we take the left fork at the stone cairn and head back towards our cars.

Sandy Bay has been a criminal hot spot, so for safety reasons we are going to run this as a pack run.  We will run in different speed groups, but we will all regroup

at the rocks at the end of LLandudno, and then again on the beach at Sandy Bay before heading onto the rocky shoreline.   Within your speed group, you will need to be sure that if you come to a turn, that the runner behind you has seen which way you go.  There will be plenty of opportunities for photographs so let's enjoy this as a social pack run.

Terrain and Distance

The terrain will include beach sand, jeep track (stony), single track, boulder-hopping and some steps to get the heart rate pumping.

Distance in the region of 11,5  km, with an estimated time of 2,5 hours, plus more to enjoy the view

Walking group:  To be confirmed on Friday

What to bring  – the usual, water, whistle, warm/waterproof top, sun block, camera, money for the car guard.  Make sure you have your emergency contact details on you.

Have a great week.

Hi Trailers,

Cross the next jeep track passing a stone beacon onto another single track. This leads past Tarturus Cave and Kalk Bay Peak. From hear head down Spes Bona Valley and onto Kalk Bay Station.

Hi Trailers,

Great news: I have persuaded Theo to assist me with this week's route so we shouldn't get as lost as we usually do on my sorties! Theo will be taking us to the Kalk Bay Mountains and will no doubt point out amazing flowers and plant life that we would otherwise miss.

Route

From Kalk Bay Station Up Norman Road, Ponder Road (steps) on to Boyes Drive. Up the stairs next to the Echo Valley Sign. At the T- junction turn Left. Follow the path till Weary Willy's.

Fast Group

The Fast Group heads up Echo Valley onto the Amphitheatre, then along the Crassula  Path. At the Jeep Track turn right. Ignore the first single track to your left. Take the second Single track to your left, down into a the small valley and back out the other side. At the next Jeep track turn Right. Continue along the Jeep Track to Navy Communication Tower. Pass the tower turn onto the single track leading to the Muizenberg Peak. From Muizenberg Peak Head down to the Plateau where the Fast Group meets up with the Medium Group at the top of Peck's valley.

From the top of peck's valley. The Fast and Medium Groups  head onto the plateau. Where the single track ahead becomes faint, take the clear sandy path to left. Heading past the Old "Silver" Mine to Saint James Peak.

From Saint James Peak head towards Nellie's Pool. At the Jeep Track turn Left. Short distance then right on to a single track. Cross the next jeep track passing a stone beacon onto another single track. This leads past Tarturus Cave and Kalk Bay Peak. From hear head down Spes Bona Valley and onto Kalk Bay Station.

Medium Group

From Weary Willy's the Mediums head to Ou Kraal. From Ou Kraal they head up to a Jeep track. Following the Jeep track ignoring all turn offs until reaching Junction Pool. From junction pool the mediums follow the jeep track right until passing the Navy communications tower. From here they head to the top of Peck's Valley where they join up with the Fast Group.
