Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: SATURDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2025

SATURDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2025

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS (TOTALSPORTS VOB MEDIUM DISTANCE TRAIL GROUP)  - Newlands Forest

Tomorrow's run is ON. START TIME 06h00.

Dawn is 06h02 so presumably light enough to start running without a headlamp.

Sunrise is 06h28.

Weather looks good.  Partly cloudy and about 17°C north westerly to westerly breeze.

This Saturday we will head into the ever-popular Newlands Forest.

PLEASE NOTE THE EARLY START TIME OF 06h00. NORMALLY NEWLANDS FOREST IS HECTIC ON A SATURDAY MORNING. HOWEVER, WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED THAT TUESDAY TRAILS WILL ALSO BE STARTING A RUN (23km) IN NEWLANDS FOREST THIS SATURDAY MORNING SO IT WILL BE EXTRA CHAOTIC. TUESDAY TRAILS IS STARTING AT 06h30. SO WE NEED TO TRY AND GET THERE BY AT LEAST 05h30 OR CONSIDER UBERING / LIFT CLUBBING.

Brief Description of Route

From the Newlands Forest car park (near the helipad and VWS base) we will first head over into Kirstenbosch and climb to the contour path via the Window Gorge steps and continue up and over the 400 steps / Aloes.  Shortly after dropping down the other side of the Aloes (not at the big rock) we drop down again to access Hiddingh Steps, Woodcutters Path and continue more or less at that level until we hit the sharp drop down the lower section of Snake Bite which we descend.  Cross straight over the Plumpudding Hill jeep track and continue to Rhodes Mem. From there we drop down into UCT and do a fast, flat University Avenue (or whatever it's called these days) and make our way back the cars though the zoo and past the Newlands Reservoir

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV in the Newlands Forest car park in time to start running at 06h00 (please come at least 10 mins earlier to allow time for signing the register and for the pre-run brief). An early start is needed because the parking gets hectic.

Terrain and Distance

Mixture of jeep track, single track and even a little stretch of t*r.  Nothing particularly technical about this route.

There will be a relaxed group.  There will be NO walking group.

About 13kms with 665m of elevation.

 Strava link: https://strava.app.link/UiNLQIrhVQb .

GPX file  – see attached

About 2.5 hours

Lots of options to drop down to the cars to form a shorter route group.

Please take note of the longer time for this route as well as the earlier start time

How to get there?

Easy to find.  Entrance to car park is right on the M3 heading towards the City from the southern suburbs.  Right below the big mountain.

Newlands Forest Station / Fire Base parking area (Click for Google Maps)

IMPORTANT:
Please make sure to bring enough water ie. minimum 1.5L for the duration of the run. Also ensure you carry a warm/windproof top and a whistle.  Also please carry some form of ICE details

This Saturday we're in the Republic of Hout Bay.

Route details
Starting from the parking by Velocity Gym, we warm up with a trot up the road to the start of the trail at East Fort. From the shortcut trail we join the jeep track until we get the split to the higher contour path where we may split into groups, those who don't like heights or don't want the steeper climb can continue along the jeep track.  We all end up at Blackburn Ravine and follow the contour path towards Chapmans Peak.  Along the single track we are treated to magnificent views (weather permitting) across the bay, note there is some mild exposure in sections adding to the adventure.
At approximately 7km groups can decide whether to summit Chapmans Peak or head down to Chapmans Peak drive, popping out by the "ticket checker".  From here we have a leg stretch on the tar (approx 4km) back to our cars.

Please remember this a social pack run led by committee with plenty of opportunities for photographs, and its important that we look out for each other.

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV in the Velocity Gym parking area at the bottom of Chappies, please come 5 mins earlier to sign the register and for a run briefing, ready to start at 06:30.

Terrain and Distance

A mix of jeep track, single track and tar.

Distance: +- 12 kms taking about 2h00 - 2h30mins, longer if doing Chapmans Peak summit.

Walking group will be confirmed in Fridays mail.

*Please note adjustments to the route may be made whilst running depending on the group and weather conditions. Remember to check Friday's email just in case there are changes.

What to bring

Water, whistle, warm/windproof top, rain jacket - weather dependent, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.

Please make sure that you are carrying the right equipment, enough food and water.

ImportantPlease remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.  Please keep together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.

PS  Sorry no dogs allowed on VOB runs
