FEEDBACK: Saturday 24 March 2018 - Contour path with climbs

A small group of trailers arrived in the pre-dawn light to sign up. Despite the overcast weather it was surprisingly warm as we stepped outside our cars.

Two routes were decided upon: two different speed groups were going to do the contour out and back route and a medium group and the relaxed group were going to go up skeleton and down nursery.

Tim and Buyiswa disappeared down the contour followed by a young couple joining us for the first time. Lorraine and her group stayed with us till the path up skeleton and then carried on as we turned left and started the climb up the mountain.

What a beautiful route. I had forgotten how amazing skeleton gorge is. The overcast weather also helped. We got to the top, took a detour to the beach at the reservoir for some pictures and a rest and then went back on to the path heading for Nursery Ravine. Nursery Ravine was also spectacular as all the king proteas were out and
I lost track of time photographing them. As soon as Debbie and I met the others at the bottom, we started off home back along the contour path.

A great day out, enjoyed by all no matter which route. The relaxed group along with a newcomer, did Skeleton and Nursery in a very respectable time.

Distances were all around 12 - 14km but the climbers took a lot longer...

Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS Saturday 17th March 2018: NEWLANDS FOREST

Good morning Trailers,

IMPORTANT CHANGE TO RV VENUE:

Tomorrow's run is ON but we'll be meeting at the NEWLANDS FIRE BASE - I repeat: NEWLANDS FIRE BASE - and not UCT parking. The area around UCT is very busy with the set up of the Epic and parking may be difficult.
Please be there by 6.25am latest for a 6.30am start.
We'll do the OMTOM 12km route but we'll start a little further in.

The weather looks fresh and clear, perfect for trail running.
Peter will be taking a Relaxed group though Nora and Marge are both away.
Any Irish blood to be announced by the wearing of the green. Sláinte!

See you there!

To: Table Mountain Trailers Group <tmtrailers@googlegroups.com>

Hi Trailers,

This Saturday we will be heading down to the woods to do a recce of the OMTOM short trail route.

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV at the UCT car park nearest the Old Zoo (but not at the Old Zoo itself). See snippet of UCT map below for directions to the car park.
Sunrise is at 6:43am so we'll start at 6:30am. Bring your headlamp if you're at all worried about the light at the beginning. Please arrive a few minutes early to sign in.

Route, terrain and distance

Starting from UCT, the route kicks off with a gentle uphill warm up, past Mount Pleasant and into Newlands Forest. Following the Newlands forest jeep tracks to the Orchards Trail, the route passes the Woodcutters ruins and enjoys kilometers of beautiful forest and streams as it meanders up to the Woodcutters track. A pleasant descent sends runners through Avatar Forest and The Old Zoo before finishing at UCT.

This route is advertised as a 12km. We can easily extend it to 14km if anybody is keen.  Further details about faster and slower groups to follow on Friday, but the Committee will run it in about 90 minutes.
The map from the OMTOM website is attached and I have it saved as a track in my Endomondo so we shouldn't get lost this time. Ahem... ;)

What to bring

The weather looks to be warm and sunny and, if we get the promised rain mid-week, there might be some freshness to the forest floor and a trickle of water in the streams so dress accordingly.
Water (essential), whistle, warm, wind or waterproof top depending on weather. Space blanket and ICE card/details.
If you have any Irish blood in your veins, wear GREEN!

Safety

This is a pack run. Please remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.

Important: Stay with your group. Front Runners wait for the back of your pack.

Dogs

Please note that K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

FEEDBACK 17 February 2018 Blockhouse, saddle and Newlands Ravine

We had a good turnout of 23 trailers considering the Batrun and Peninsula and other runs happening. The weather was cool and kind at the start at Newland's Car Park. We also had a visitor from the UK on an internship for 6 months in Cape Town who joined us to try out the trails.

The relaxed group of 3 decided to climb up Newland's Ravine to the saddle and then return the same way. The rest of us started out in a big group but very early into the long uphill slog to the blockhouse we separated into a fast and a medium group.

At the blockhouse, the medium group voted to try Mowbray Ridge and the Upper Traverse as most people hadn't done this route. Theo led the way and we scrambled up the ridge stopping often to breathe and drink in the scenery. It really is a spectacular route. While on the upper traverse, we spotted the emergency helicopter and teams practicing drills far below us. Good to know they were there...

A lot more uphill zig zagging brought us to the top of the path, where we picked up Thomas who had gracefully fallen back from the fast group. We scampered downhill (at last!) following the Bat Run markers to the saddle path, where we had one last little climb to the top of Newland's Ravine.

Here the back marker climbers shot to the front and there was a different set of back markers who nervously picked their way downhill. Once at the picnic table, the group spread out as everyone headed for home through the tangled forest paths.

The distance covered was around 10km in about 3.5hrs and there were some very tired bodies, but definitely a route worth doing again.

FEEDBACK Saturday 10th February - Red Disa run

Saturday 10 February 2018  –  Valentine's Red Disa Run – Constantia Neck, Reservoirs, Aqueducts back via the Smuts track

Approx 35 runners joined us for our annual Red Disa run at Constantia Nek.

After the usual safety briefing we all made our way up the steps and shortcuts and then onto the overseer’s hut. The rain had settled the dust and made it a very pleasant day out on the mountain.

By this time we were definitely divided into 3 groups.  From here we took Smut’s track and made our way to the dams, across the wall, and then onto the aqueducts. All groups returned via the Smuts track – except a few who had time constraints and turned back.

We were not disappointed – the red disas were there in full bloom.

Thanks to Richard for looking after the faster group of about 5 runners.  I didn’t see them after the run, but I think they managed about 14 km in under 3 hours.

The medium group was led by Julian and co and managed by our usual committee.  We did 14 km in over 3 hours.  The relaxed group managed a similar distance and spent a bit longer on the mountain enjoying the flowers.

Thanks to Jo, Liz, Lorraine and others for the lovely photos. (Pls see our facebook page.)

Congratulations to Nora on completing her 75th sortie with the group

A few of us joined Paul for a farewell coffee after the run – he will be working overseas for a while.

FEEDBACK: 3 February 2018: Front face Table Mountain

25 Trailers pitched up today on a slightly chilly morning but the Main Group soon warmed up on the slog up Kloof Corner.

We headed out to Oppelskop and instead of just running past it we went to the lookout for those who had never bagged that ‘peak’.

The Main Group of 17 split naturally into 3 speed groups on the way back with Natalie leading the way, Allison in the middle and Liz sweeping.

The Main Group did between 12.5km and 13.5km depending on whether they chose to go down at the Cable Car path or carry on to Kloof Corner stairs. They took around 3hrs.

The Relaxed Group of 8  led by Julian did a Signal Hill/Lions circuit  9.65km in 1h31.

A lovely uneventful run with no mishaps.

FEEDBACK: Saturday 27th January 2018 - Silvermine

The plan was to try a new take on an old favourite by starting at the reservoir car park instead of the main gate, with the ultimate intention of ending the morning with a swim to wash off the dust and sweat. However, the weather didn't play fair and we were almost blown off our feet on arrival at the gate at 6:45am. Liz braved the gusts to document the sky while the rest of us huddled in our cars.

(Incidentally, the poor SANparks man had to walk up Ou Kaapse Weg again. All of us coming from the Tokai side must have driven right past him. Let's make a point of looking out for him and giving him a lift next time!)

Once everybody had signed in, we broke into two groups, Main and Relaxed, knowing that the Main Group would break up once we reached the first hill. After a brief explanation of the route, we set off towards the first photo op at the old fire lookout overlooking Noordhoek. This was a first for the Trailers and much excitement was expressed and the obligatory photos taken. As the Main group (still together at this point) descended the knoppie, the Relaxeds climbed up and there was much checking that sufficient pictures had been taken of the view of Noordhoek beach through the gap in the peaks.

The next section of the run was to Noordhoek Peak where we climbed up into the thick mist and the cloud eclipsed the view of Hout Bay, frustrating our photographers. Judy managed to conduct the thick cover into remission for long enough to take a few snaps. The group was keen to move on quickly however, as the temperature at the top was quite icy.  Neil marvelled at the pool of fresh water in the basin of rock.

At the next fork in the path, the group was given the option to take the 'Danger: High Winds' route around the sea-side of Noordhoek Peak or the safer jeep track, and the split resulted in only Lorraine and Neil taking the low road. The daring-do group split into two however, the front runners led by Greg and swept by Geoff and the second group led by Theo and swept by Liz. Progress was fairly slow for the back runners, according to reports, but Neil and Lorraine reached the Blackburn Lookout long before either of the other two groups.

The last part of the first half of the planned figure-of-eight was a simple jeep track run as far as the reservoir path.

It was at the reservoir that Neil and Lorraine met up with the Relaxed group who were about to set off on the lower half of the 8. Relaxed watches read roughly 6.5kms and so the planned 2kms to the main gate and 2kms up the River Walk was deemed to be a fine. We deviated from the map slightly in taking the boardwalk around the dam before setting off up the jeep track again, this time looking for a path to the left. As we started running, we saw the both Greg's and Theo's parts of the Main group arrive at the reservoir, expecting them to catch up with us within a short time.

HOWEVER... It seems that Noordhoek Peak had taken the wind out of their sails, or maybe it was the psychology of running past the parked cars, or maybe it was pressing appointments, or whatever the reason, but the Main groups decided not to do the second half of the run as planned! (Faders!) Instead, they found a short loop which brought their total distance up to some 10kms and went home - except for Sam and Judy who were determined to have a swim and a picnic, and Felicity & Theo who had to wait for Neil, their chauffeur.

The newly named Fast Relaxeds (Neil and Lorraine) and the Regular Relaxeds enjoyed a fabulous sandy downhill single track (recognised by Lorraine as the Old Fisherman's path) all the way down to Ou Kaapse Weg. Thank goodness for Marge's phone-map, as we turned off a little early and needed to make a detour after a couple of hundred metres. Everybody agreed that the fast runnable trail was a really lovely new discovery for the Trailers.

The final leg of the morning was a tiring slog up the River Walk, which had never felt longer. It's interesting how different a section of trail that's usually covered at the beginning of the morning can feel at the end of a run!

The final distance for the Fast Relaxeds was 15.3kms, which took a total of 2h39 running time, but 3 hours overall.

More photos on facebook. Thank you, Liz.

FEEDBACK: Saturday 20 January 2018 - Lion's Head loop from Kloof Nek

Despite the southeaster howling around us and the tablecloth covering the mountain, Kloofnek parking was a calm oasis! It was actually quite hot!

Jayson led the fast group of three, hoping to find the correct route around Signal Hill, the medium group was led by the usual committee and the relaxed group were very organised with their route plotted and saved on Marge's phone.

We all started together up the hill and turned left up the Lion's Head route to take a small deviation from the usual path just for fun!  After climbing up and around we looked over signal hill and the city and took the path leading down to the Kramat. Here we came into contact with some of the wind, but it was welcome due to the heat!

The path round Signal Hill and back along to the base of Lion's Head was long and hot. Very different when it is at the start of the run! But it was good to have some runnable track.

On the way back we took The Glen path to avoid the road and to get some shade for the last slog uphill.

A good 12.5km run for fast and medium groups; slightly less for the relaxed group. Hot with lots of uphill but a great run with stunning views all around.
