Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS Saturday 26th October 2019: JONKERSHOEK

Good morning Trailers!

This weather is gorgeous for the garden and for ducks but perhaps not so lekker for trail running. Fortunately, windguru suggests that it'll all be over by the morning and our a Jonkershoek run will be cool, calm and collected. So cool, in fact, that you might need a warm fleecy top and gloves.

Based on the RSVPs, I hope to see a good crowd at the entrance to the reserve tomorrow at 7:20 for a 7:30 start.

There is no relaxed group.

Directions and fine print below and on the blog.

Hi Trailers,

<image.png>

Saturday 26th October is the day we trek northwards to visit Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.

The official Cape Nature website reads: "The rugged Jonkershoek Mountains, which form part of the Boland Mountains, are ideal for hiking enthusiasts. [...]. The area is also rich in animal and plant life, with over 1 100 plant species and a variety of small mammals, birds and reptiles. Hikers should be on the lookout for berg adders, puff adders, boomslang and Cape cobras. The reserve is about 9 800 hectares, while Assegaaibosch is about 204 hectares. The smaller reserve is home to the historical Assegaaibosch farmstead, a national monument built in 1792, while both reserves are World Heritage SitesJonkershoek is hot in summer, and cold and wet in winter. Visitors in the colder months may even see snow dusting the higher mountain peaks. Hikers should note that weather conditions can change rapidly."

Our Stellenbosch-based trail friends, May and Ilse, are all ready to lead us on us route they've chosen. Hopefully they'll steer clear of all the snakes mentioned in that write-up!

Route details

The medium group will start from the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve entrance, meandering upwards on the new multi-use single track for 3.7kms. Then we run along the contour jeep track for about 2 kms before starting our descent, finally taking a scenic hiking route single track back to the gate. We'll be led by the marvellous May Scholz.

There's an extension of the route for the fitter, faster trail junkies too. At the point where the main group starts their descent, intrepid Ilse Langhout will lead the pack further along the jeep track and two stunning single tracks, possibly three, before heading back to the gate.

Please join us afterwards for coffee and/or breakfast at Ride-In.

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV at the main Jonkershoek gate at 07:25 ready to start at 07:30. (You don't have to set your alarm too early!)

There is an entrance fee of R50.

Terrain and Distance

Terrain to be discovered on the day!
Medium group distance 8kms; longer group to be decided on the day by the participants, but I did hear mention of about 14km.

Relaxed Group to be confirmed on Friday.

Please bring:

A whistle, WATER (remember a trail 10km can take longer than a road 10km), a warm & waterproof/windproof top, space blanket and ICE (In case of Emergency) tag or card.

Unfortunately we do not welcome dogs on our runs.

Directions (for those that don't do Google maps or Waze):

How to get there

From Cape Town: Take the N2 highway out of Cape Town towards Stellenbosch. Take exit 33 for Baden Powell Drive towards the R310/Stellenbosch/Macassar. Turn right onto Polkadraai Road/R310 and follow the road. It becomes Adam Tas Street. Turn right onto Langstraat-Suid Road and continue onto Helshoogte Road. Turn right onto Simonsberg Road and at the roundabout take the first exit onto Martinson Road. Continue onto Jonkershoek Road and follow the signs until your reach the reserve entrance.

This Saturday we meet at Constantia Neck to explore the Vlakkenberg.

Route details

Meet at the Constantia Neck parking.

Heading a short distance down the tar road towards Hout Bay you will see a green gate on the left signposted for Vlakkenberg, once through we start with an up (surprise!). Over the neck we take a sho't left from the trail to admire the vistas across the Constantia vineyards and False Bay. Returning back to the trail we continue our undulation (running passed Bokkemanskloof) until we get to tar road leading to the Constantia mast.
A little way up the tar there's a contour path to the right which will lead us to another stunning viewpoint, this time across Hout Bay. We then retrace our steps back to Bokkemanskloof where we turn down (yay!), continuing to join the gravel road on the right with a leg stretch back to Constantia Neck.

Please remember this a pack run led by committee, and its important that we look out for each other.

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV in the parking area 06:25 ready to start at 06:30.

Terrain and Distance

Mostly single track, short bit of tar, and a gravel road finish.
Distance: +- 10 kms taking about 2h30 to 3h00 for Medium Group

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - EXTRAORDINARY COMMUNICATION

Hi Trailers,

Please forgive me for adding another email to your mail box, but we would like to assess whether or not there is any interest in the Jonkershoek sortie scheduled for Saturday 26th October. There has been a suggestion that perhaps an hour's drive is too far for many suburban and city-dwelling Capetonians.

We have two wonderful Stellenbosch-based leaders ready to show us their playground, with a planned route of 14km for the longer group and a shorter option (with no exposure!) for the medium/relaxed group. They have suggested a local breakfast venue for after the run so as to make a full morning of it.

Please would you let me know if you are planning on joining the group out beyond the boerewors curtain?
I think it might be best to send me a private email or whatsapp to prevent clogging up everybody's inbox.

Thank you!
Lorraine

good morning Trailers

This coming Saturday we are starting from Newlands at 6:30, and going UP.

We make our way UP to the Blockhouse, then UP Mowbray Ridge (a little bit of exposure to heights, but perfectly do-able)
We then go UP, ignoring the 580m traverse path to the right, and stop for a breather at the junction of the 700m traverse and the Knife Edge
Carefully ignoring the Knife Edge path, we go right along the 700m traverse all the way to the summit of Devil's Peak
Then it is back down to the saddle and a the last UP to the top of Newlands Ravine, and straight down to the cars

Here are some links with the details, which basically says we will do 9.3km, go UP over 1000m, and burn 1247 kcal's

so in summary it is not much distance, but will be tough with lots of UP, and will take a bit of time
The views from the 700m traverse are seriously impressive

There will be a relaxed group which will explore Newlands Forest and surrounds

Remember:

Water, Whistle, Warm/windproof/rain top, ICE information and a snack, and a few bucks for the car guard
… and some cold beers for after

 Groups

This is a pack run with regular regroups, and we will split into speed groups with leaders and sweeps on the morning.

Please remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.
Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.

Dogs

Please note that  K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS T-SHIRTS 2019

Dear Trailers,

After a long, hard season out there on the mountain, It's time to think about your trail running wardrobe.

If you've noticed more than a reasonable distance between you and the runner behind you on the trails, or if people are taking a step backwards at regroups and photostops, if you're proud of your position on the Runners' Log, or if your favourite top has simply started to fall apart at the seams… it may be time to order a TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS T-SHIRT!

Prices are reasonable, fabrics and colours are tried-and-tested not to fade, split or hold on to smells (well, not too much) and they are locally made so you'll be supporting local industry – hooray! What's more, your t-shirt is hand-made FOR YOU! You can't say that about the one you bought at Mr Price Sport or even the one you earned at UTCT.

Attached is this year's order form and colour/style guideline. Shout if you need any help.

Regards,

Lorraine

Hi all Trailers!

This week we go back up on to Table Mountain from the pipetrack side but start from Theresa Ave in Camps Bay at 6.30 am.

It is October and the sun is up earlier!

Route:

We start at Theresa Ave and climb up to meet the pipetrack.  From here we turn right and run along the pipetrack to Woody Ravine. After a steep climb up Woody, there are many options depending on time constraints.  A longer distance option will be to come down Diagonal but for those wanting to keep it shorter can come back down Kasteelspoort and back down to the cars.

Rendezvous:

We meet at Theresa Ave in Camps Bay (see attachment for directions) at 6.25am ready to run at 6.30am.

Terrain and distance:

This is mostly single track with a bit a of jeep track at the start and end. Some steep climbs and descents but the views are worth it. The distance is around 10km and there are ample routes for those who want a bit of extra distance.

Directions:

Coming from town, pass the turnoff to the cable car at the Kloof Nek circle and continue down towards Camps Bay, taking the 3rd road to the left (Fiskaal Road). Follow this road up the hill - it winds up and around and becomes Francolin Ave and then Theresa Ave. Parking at the entrance is limited so park along the sea side of the road as far as possible taking care not to block any resident' s driveways or entrances. Please ensure that your car is facing the correct direction.

Remember:

Water, Whistle, Warm/windproof/rain top, ICE information and a snack.

The relaxed group will be confirmed on Friday.

Dogs

Please note that  K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday !
