TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - SATURDAY 02 APRIL 2022: THREE VALLEYS AND A VIEW OF CPT

Hi, Trailers,

After a gentle flat run last Saturday, this Saturday we stretch our legs and ascend Table Mountain via Kasteelspoort, pass the Valley of the Red Gods, go through the Valley of Isolation to the top of Platteklip, run along the top of Table Mountain to Maclear's beacon, down Smuts track to the top of Skeleton Gorge, past the dams and back down Kasteelspoort.

Route

We park at Theresa Avenue in Camps Bay and go up the jeep track taking the shortcut to the base of Kasteelspoort. We climb up Kasteelspoort, turn left at the top following the path through the Valley of the Red Gods and the Valley of Isolation (with the requisite hills in between…) until we reach the junction in Echo Valley. Here we go straight up, climb the 3 ladders, turn right at the top of Platteklip, run along the top/front path to Maclear's beacon, down Smuts track to the top of Skeleton Gorge, turn right passing Hely-Hutchinson and Woodhead reservoirs. From here we make our way back to Kasteelspoort and back home. See pic below.

This is not a long route but includes a fair amount of climbing and descending.

For those who want a shorter option, turn right at the first junction in Echo Valley which will take you down to the jeep track. Turn right to make your way back to Kasteelspoort.

For those who want a longer run, a route to be decided by the group.

Saturday's weather is looking cool at 17deg with no wind.

Rendezvous and start time

Park at Theresa Avenue by 6h15am ready to start at 6:30 am. Please arrive early – parking fills up fast.

Be careful how and where you park as traffic fines are a real possibility

Terrain & Distance

The route is mainly on a single track with some jeep tracks at the start and end. The first 2km are uphill. Thereafter undulating up hills and down valleys. Downhill from Maclear's back to the start.

The stated route is around 13km, the shorter route is around 8km. (distances estimated!)

What to bring

Water, whistlea space blanket, and your ICE information. The weather can be different at the top of the mountain. Please come prepared for wind, mist, or extreme heat!

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof/warm gear/lots of water.

Directions to Theresa Avenue

From Cape Town:

Pass the entrance to the cable car and continue down Camps Bay Drive. Take the third road to the left (Fiskaal Road and follow this winding road up the mountain – it becomes Francolin Road and then Theresa Avenue. Park on the sea-side of the road facing the correct way without blocking driveways or obstructing traffic. We will start at the entrance to the Jeep Trail which is the first road (cul de sac) to the left after the road becomes Theresa Avenue

From Camps Bay/Bakoven:

Get on to Camps Bay Drive from Victoria Road, go round the left-hand hairpin bend and Fiskaal is on the right near the bus stop.

Please note that TMT unfortunately does not allow dogs on its runs.

Please be aware that our runs operate under strict COVID protocols even though now on level 1.

  • No gathering in a big group at the start or end of the run
  • Practice social distancing
  • Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape

Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS; SATURDAY 5TH MARCH 2022: VLAKKENBERGK:C'NEK:(ROOIKAT):SILVERHURST

Happy Friday!

Our Vlakkenberg route tomorrow is definitely ON!

Tim Bellairs will be leading the main group, Grant Carelse may be leading a slight variation through De Hel, and there will be a Relaxed group with Liz and I.
There will be no Walkers this week.

Please bring plenty of water as it is going to be another lovely warm morning:

See you at High Constantia shopping centre at 6am!
(I think it may be best to park on the unpaved area furthest from the shops so as not to annoy the business owners.)

Hi Trailers!

This coming week we'll be returning to an old favourite - Vlakkenberg... but with a difference.

A section of our 'normal' Vlakkies route has been closed due to development so we will be approaching the peak from the Constantia side, following the route designed in July last year by the good folk at Gone store.
(If you are on Strava, look for the Gone2Gone segment. https://www.strava.com/routes/2844493720690593262.)

We'll park at High Constantia and grin and bear the first couple of kms of tar at the beginning as we warm up - to the top of Price Drive and the start of the trail. After the initial steep ascent, we'll head towards the Peak one some flowing single track.
We'll continue to follow the Gone2Gone route from the Peak to Constantia Nek, descending alongside the Silvermist vineyards, and will cross the road at the Nek to begin the second section of the route.

The longer faster group will take a quick jog along the Contour path and up Rooikat Ravine before descending to Cecilia Forest and to the top of Southern Cross Drive via the Cork Forest. (Or any variation on this that the leader decides on the day.)
The medium/relaxed group will run directly to the top of SCD from the Nek and head down.
We will all have to endure another section of tar before joining the Silverhurst trail and back to the cars.

There may be a walking group which will require some car admin - to be confirmed on Friday.

Rendezvous and Start Time

We'll meet in the High Constantia car park just after 6am ready to start running at 6.15,
The weather will be warm by all accounts so please bring plenty of water, plus the usual compulsory kit.

Terrain and Distance

Tar, single track, jeep track = a bit of everything.
Distance will be 18km if Rooikat is included, about 12km if not.

Please remember this a social pack run led by committee with plenty of opportunities for photographs, and it's important that we look out for each other. Within your speed group, you will need to be sure that if you come to a turn that the runner behind you has seen which way you go.

*Please note adjustments to the route may be made whilst running depending on the group and weather conditions. Remember to check Friday's email just in case there are changes.

Please remember our group runs are still under COVID protocols.

 ·         No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run

·         All runners to carry a mask or buff

·         Practice social distancing

·         We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run

·         Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe

·         We will monitor the groups on a weekly basis for size

·         VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape

·         If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home

Let me know if you have any questions.
