TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS Sat 3rd August 2019 Constantia Greenbelts

Morning Trailers

This week we will return to run the Constantia Greenbelts.

Route
We will run the greenbelts, including the Alphen trail, Klaasenbosch Trail and the Diep River Trail.  An extra loop can be added in Cecilia forest to give some ext
ra distance.

Rendezvous and start time
Meet at 7.20am in the Constantia Sports complex parking area ready to run at 7.30am.  Enter the sports complex (at the Brommersvlei/Constantia Rd intersection), and park on the left-hand side as you enter.

Terrain and distance
There will be a few ups and downs, some jeep tracks and some single tracks, but generally not much technical stuff – so ideal for newcomers. We will do the route in a clockwise direction, hopefully avoiding the Constantia Parkrun.
Distance in the order of 10-12kms, taking around 2hrs.

Groups
This is a pack run with regular regroups, we will split into speed groups with leaders and sweeps on the morning.
The relaxed group will be confirmed on Friday

Dogs
Please note that  K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top depending on weather, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.

ImportantPlease remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.
Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.

Have a good week.

Dear Trailers,

Route
On Saturday we start once at Newlands Forest car park near the Helipad. We go up to the blockhouse, from there we take the lower traverse around the mountain and Oppelskop, up the zig zags along to Saddle Rock and continue on to the saddle between Devil's Peak and Table Mountain. From there we head to the spectacular Newlands Ravine to get back down to the picnic table and straight back down to the car park

From the blockhouse, those that are keen and have no exposure problems can take Mowbray Ridge and go up to Devil's Peak and then meet the rest at the saddle before going down Newlands Ravine - dotted line on map.

Faster Group will follow a similar route with an extension decided on the day.

Relaxed Group will be confirmed on Friday.

Please Bring:
whistle, water, a warm /waterproof/windproof top dependent on weather, space blanket and ICE (In Case of Emergency) tag or card

Our next run will be as follows:

13 July 2019 : Silvermine and the Sunbird Centre

Route
We haven't run this route in a while but we will basically do the same route, but this time we will start from the parking in Silvermine (Gate 2), cross the road and run the Old Wagon Route first and then up the Silvermine valley via the Sunbird Centre

Run Leader/Manager

Julian and Gae Tompkins

Rendezvous and Start Time

Terrain and Distance.   Some undulating bush trails and gravel tracks via the Old Wagon Road.  Then a good downhill jog to the Sunbird centre then a gradually steeping run up the valley.  The plan is to  go to the amphitheatre before returning to our cars

Distance will be approx. 14 km and  in the region of 2hrs 30 mins

Our runs are pack runs and will may split into 2 or 3 pace groups on the day.  Relaxed group to be confirmed on Friday

RE: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: 6 July 2019 - Maclear's Beacon via Platteklip Gorge

Hi Trailers!

Our run on Saturday is ON! The weather looks drippy but nothing too wet, with a bit of a breeze. There may be cloud on the mountain.

We can decide on the morning whether it is worth going up the mountain. If not, then I do have another route planned from the same starting point.

Please bring warm and waterproof tops to cope with wet and wind chill.

It'll be fun!

Subject: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: 6 July 2019 - Maclear's Beacon via Platteklip Gorge

Hi Trailers

This week we will be climbing to the highest point on the Cape Peninsular and bagging another of Ryan's 13 peaks!

Please ensure that you have read all the details in the email…

 Route details

We park at the Platteklip parking and wind our way up Platteklip Gorge taking in the spectacular views of Cape Town as the sun rises. Once we reach the top and catch our breath, we turn left and make our way to Maclear's Beacon. There are two options here: the left hand path is fairly exposed but beautiful and the right hand path is the normal tourist path that follows the yellow footprints to Maclear's. We celebrate reaching the highest point, take in the views and choose from a variety of paths for the way back.

  1. Return the same way and descend Platteklip  (10kms total)
  2. For those who don't like descents, return the same way and catch the cable car down and run back along the tar road to the cars (9km total)
  3. Take Smuts track south from Maclears and return to Platteklip via the Echo Valley path (12km)

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV at  the  parking at the bottom of Platteklip Gorge along Tafelberg Road at 7:25am ready to start at 7:30am.

Terrain and Distance

Single track and boardwalks with a steep, winding climb and descent. Flowing running at the top.

For those who don't like descents, the cable car is an option. The rate is R190 one way with a 20% discount for MyGreenCard. Tickets must be purchased from webtickets beforehand

The distance will be between 10 and 12kms, depending on route chosen. If you skip Maclear's and turn back at the top of Platteklip, it will be 6kms.

The climb up Platteklip can take a while so this is not a route to do if you have time constraints.

Relaxed Group

There will be a relaxed group.

Please Bring:

A whistle, water, a warm /waterproof/windproof top  dependent on weather, space blanket and ICE tag or card. It is often misty, cold and windy at the top of the mountain so it's recommended that you are prepared for anything.  Snacks are a good idea.

For safety, it is the responsibility of everyone to check behind you to ensure that the person behind is still there and that they see where you turn off

Unfortunately no dogs allowed on our runs.

Directions to Platteklip Parking:

Go up Tafelberg Road, pass the lower Cable Station and drive for about 1.5kms. You will see parking on your left just before the reservoir on the bend at the start of the trail. Cars can also be parked along the right hand side of the road taking care not to block traffic. Leave nothing of value in the cars.

See you there

 Liz
