TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILER - SILVERMINE EAST - TAGGING PEAKS 5 FEBRUARY 2022

Hi Trailers

This Saturday 5 February 2022 we head to one of my favourites and possibly one of the most underrated runs on the Peninsula – Silvermine East (the side closer to Muizenberg as opposed to the Dam side).   The only downside is the late gate opening time.

Rendezvous and Start Time:

Now these instructions need a bit of focus.  Although we are running the Eastern section, we are going to park in the car park just inside the Western Gate 1 (which is the entrance on the Dam side).  This is because Gate 1 opens at 07h00 whereas Gate 2 only opens at 08h00 (all year round).  This car park is also a bit safer from a break-in perspective.

Please be at the Gate 1 by 07h00 at the latest and we will aim to start running at 07h10.

You will need either money for entry fees (R36 per person plus R25 per car) for SA Residents OR valid Wild Card / Green Card (plus ID).  If you are not SA resident please check out the other rates below.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO CELL PHONE RECEPTION AT THE GATE SO IF YOU'RE RUNNING LATE THEN YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO NOTIFY US.

Route details:

We will cut across Ou Kaapseweg to Gate 2 and then turn almost immediately left and ascend the little ravine to the east of Wolfkop.  We make our way up to Fat Lady's Cave (not named by me) at the summit of the Higher Steenberg Peak.  Hugging the ridgeline we will descend to the aerials at the foot of the Lower Steenberg Peak.  If it's not hot, we will scramble up the side of Lower Steenberg Peak and tag that summit too.  Then we descend to the path that leads to Muizenberg Peak.  We ascend Muizenberg Peak from the easy side and drop down to the top of Farmer Peck's Valley.  Then we head across to St James Peak, past Muizenberg Cave to Nellie's Pool.  Left at the pool and cross the jeep track and climb to Tartarus Cave and Kalk Bay Peak.  We cross the top of Spes Bona Valley and drop down into the Amphitheatre.  Then we take the path leading to Cave Peak, down Dead Man's Path, traverse around to the jeep track and then jeep track back to Gate 2, across Ou Kaapseweg and back to the cars for an ICE cold beer.

Please remember this a pack run, and it's important that we look out for each other.

Terrain and Distance:

Mostly single track and some jeep track.  Nothing unduly technical or exposed.

Distance: +- 14 kms taking about 2.5 - 3hrs for Medium Group.  But there are plenty of short cuts.

There will be a Relaxed Group led by Lorraine which will do a shorter route.

Walking group to be confirmed on Friday.

*Please note adjustments to the route may be made whilst running depending on the group and weather conditions.

Please bring:

A whistle, WATER  a warm & waterproof/windproof top, space blanket and ICE (In case of Emergency) tag or card.

There is very little shade on this route so bring extra protection against the sun and extra water

Unfortunately no dogs are allowed on our runs.  In any event, dogs are not allowed in this section of Silvermine.

Please remember to adhere to the COVID rules below:

.    No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run.

.    All runners to carry a mask or buff.

.    Practice social/physical distancing.

.    We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run.

.    No personal sign in - ensure the leader ticks you in/out. Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe.

.    We will monitor the groups on a weekly basis for size.

.    VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape.

.    If you have any symptoms, have been in contact with anyone with symptoms or are feeling unwell, please stay at home.

Have a great week!

Subject: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 2022: THREE VALLEYS AND AN AQUEDUCT

Hi Trailers

After the gentle start to the year last Saturday, this Saturday we ascend Table Mountain via Kasteelspoort, pass the Valley of the Red Gods, go through the Valley of Isolation and run along Echo Valley before returning via the Aqueduct path.

Route

We park at Theresa Avenue in Camps Bay and go up the jeep track taking the shortcut to the base of Kasteelspoort. We climb up Kasteelspoort, turn left at the top following the path through the Valley of the Red Gods and the Valley of Isolation (with the requisite hills in between…) until we reach the junction in Echo Valley. Here we turn right and run along the valley. We cross over the first junction and run to the junction with Smuts Track. Here we turn right and run to the junction with the Aqueduct, turn right and follow the aqueduct path down to the dam. From here we make our way back to Kasteelspoort and back home.

This is not a long route but includes a fair amount of climbing and descending.

For those who want a shorter option, turn right at the first junction in Echo Valley which will take you down to the jeep track. Turn right to make your way back to Kasteelspoort.

For those who want a longer run, turn left at Smuts Track and make your way to Maclear's Beacon – out and back or return route to be decided by the group

Rendezvous and start time

Park at Theresa Avenue by 6h15am ready to start at 6:30am. Please arrive early – parking fills up fast.

Be careful how and where you park as traffic fines are a real possibility

Terrain & Distance

The route is mainly single track with some jeep track at the start and end. The first 2km are uphill. Thereafter undulating up hills and down valleys. Downhill from Smuts track junction to the aqueduct, down aqueduct valley and down Kasteelspoort.

The stated route is around 11km, the shorter route around 8km and the longer route around 13km if out and back (distances estimated!)

What to bring

Water, whistlea space blanket and your ICE information. The weather can be different on the top of the mountain. Please come prepared for wind, mist or extreme heat!

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof/warm gear/lots of water.

Directions to Theresa Avenue

From Cape Town:

Pass the entrance to the cable car and continue down Camps Bay Drive. Take the third road to the left (Fiskaal Road and follow this winding road up the mountain – it becomes Francolin Road and then Theresa Avenue. Park on the sea-side of the road facing the correct way without blocking driveways or obstructing traffic. We will start at the entrance to the Jeep Trail which is the first road (cul de sac) to the left after the road becomes Theresa Avenue

From Camps Bay/Bakoven:

Get on to Camps Bay Drive from Victoria Road, go round the left-hand hair pin bend and Fiskaal is on the right near the bus stop.

To: Table Mountain Trailers Group <tmtrailers@googlegroups.com>

Hi Trailers,

Welcome to 2022! We're starting the year with a familiar and favourite route: Mouille Point – Lion's Head Loop.

Route details

From Mouille Point (Green Point) lighthouse, we warm up with a jog along Beach Road and head up Glengariff Road.  At the top of Glengariff, we catch our breath, then hit the trail, turning right to run above Sea Point below the rump of the lion.

Following the Lions Head Path, at the intersection below the Kramat we keep low and continue around the base of Lions Head, returning to the Kramat. The stronger runners (who perhaps didn't indulge in as many mince pies as some of us) may take a climb up the Lion if they so wish.

From the Kramat, we enjoy a flattish run along Signal Hill ridge to the next parking area where we turn right to head down, running the jeep track above the Bo-kaap towards the noon day gun.  We pause here to take some great pics with the cannons and of the view before our slalom down the side of the mountain to Green Point.

The final stretch takes us through suburbia to Green Point Park and return to the lighthouse.

Rendezvous and Start Time:

RV at  the Moullie Point (Green Point) Lighthouse at 6:25am ready to start running at 6:30am

Terrain and Distance:

Mostly single track with some solid climbing and flowing running.

Distance: approx 12-13kms taking about 2-3 hours.

Group leaders will be determined on the morning – but there will definitely be a Relaxed Group AND a walking group. It's that time of year! 😉

This is a pack run and for safety, please check behind you to ensure that the person behind is still there and that they see where you turn off.  Routes are subject to deviation on the day.

Don't leave home without:

whistle, water, a warm /waterproof/windproof top dependent on weather, space blanket and ICE (In Case of Emergency) tag or card and sun protection.

Unfortunately no dogs allowed on our runs.

Please be aware that our runs operate under strict COVID protocols even though now on level 1.

·  No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run

·  All runners to carry a mask or buff

·  Practice social distancing

·  We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run

·  Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
