Saturday 26th June , Sandy Bay circuit, anti-clockwise direction

Rendezvous and Start Time

Meet at the brick-paved parking on Eustagia Way, opposite Brunia Way Hout Bay.  Ready to start running at 7h30 – sunrise is 7h53 . Please come 10 mins earlier to sign the register and for a run briefing

Please be aware there is limited parking, so please try and share lifts with friends, or even park away from the area and walk to the start.  Please be considerate when parking your car.

Directions

Take the Hout Bay Main Road around the circle into Victoria Road, drive thro' the robots and take the second road to the left into Edgar Road and second road on the right. Into Eustegia Way. Parking area on the left opposite Brunia Way.

Route

We will run the route in an anti-clockwise direction.

The route starts with a short uphill on the brick paved road, then down to the beach and proceed onto Llandudno .  We then backtrack to Sandy Bay, enjoy the views and head southwards along the shoreline to OudeSchip Peninsula. You can spot the shipwreck Harvest Capella (1986).   We may be able to get closer to the rusted shipwreck on the rocks. This will then be followed by a steep climb on gabion steps to Rocket (Mitchells) Road.  Once on the gravel road, we run until we take the left fork at the stone cairn and head back towards our cars.

Sandy Bay has been a criminal hot spot, so for safety reasons we are going to run this as a pack run.  We will run in different speed groups, but we will all regroup (within Covid protocols) at the rocks at the end of LLandudno, and then again on the beach at Sandy Bay before heading onto the rocky shoreline.   Within your speed group, you will need to be sure that if you come to a turn, that the runner behind you has seen which way you go.  There will be plenty of opportunities for photographs so let's enjoy this as a social pack run.

Terrain and Distance

The terrain will include beach sand, jeep track (stony), single track, boulder-hopping and some steps to get the heart rate pumping.

Distance in the region of 11,5  km, with an estimated time of 2,5 hours, plus more to enjoy the view

What to bring – the usual, water, whistle, warm/waterproof top, sun block, camera, money for the car guard.  Make sure you have your emergency contact details on you.

Have a great week.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: SATURDAY 12 JUNE 2021 - TAGGING PEAKS IN SILVERMINE EAST

Good day Trailers,

Please be aware of our runs under strict COVID protocols

  • No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run
  • All runners to carry a mask or buff
  • Practice social distancing
  • We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run
  • No personal sign in – ensure the leader ticks you in/out. Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • We will monitor the groups on a weekly basis for size
  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape
  • If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home
  • If you are not comfortable with group running yet, you can use the maps to enjoy the routes in your own time

Route
This coming Saturday we are going to collect the peaks in Silvermine East.  Starting at Silvermine Gate 2 (aka the R5.00 gate).  This is the one on the southern (side closer to Muizenberg) side at the top of Ou Kaapseweg.  We will head straight down the jeep track and take the contour around to the Deadmans path leading up to Cave Peak, swinging around to the Amphitheatre at the top.  From the Amphitheatre we climb up and over to Spes Bona Valley.  From Spes Bona we tag Kalk Bay peak, Tartarus Cave and then head down to Nellies Pool.  Then it’s Muizenberg Cave, St James peak and across to the top of Farmer Peck’s Valley.  The strong and fit will then do Muizenberg Peak and head along the ridge towards the Lower Steenberg Peak where they will meet up again with the unfit and lazy (me) near the aerials.  Then we do the last big climb to the Higher Steenberg peak and Wolfkop before dropping down to the car park again.

11 – 12km.  There are short cuts available.

Weather

At this stage the forecast is for a cool start at 12 degrees, partly cloudy.

Rendezvous and start time
Meet at the Silvermine Gate 2 car park.  Opening time is 08h00 so we will aim to get started by 08h15 latest.  Please note that there is no cell phone reception in the car park so if you’re running late you won’t be able to let us know.

Please bring a tip for the car guard.

Terrain and distance
Starts off with nice gentle, downhill jeep track and then flat single track to warm up.  Thereafter it is mainly single track.  Short, sharp climbs and descents.  Nothing too technical and no terrifying exposure to heights.  Should take 2.5 hours.

Groups
This is a pack run with regular regroups.  We will split into 2 speed groups, if necessary, with leaders and sweeps on the morning.  But the main group will be the medium pace group as the leader has not been doing much running recently and will be leading from the back(ish).  Can’t promise a faster group.

The relaxed group will be confirmed on Friday

Dogs
Please note that  K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top depending on weather, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.  Cold drinks for the rehydrating session in the car park afterwards.

ImportantPlease remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.
Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.
