TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: Saturday 5 September 2020 - 3 Blockhouses Run

Hi Trailers!

Welcome back to Table Mountain Trailers and runs on the mountain! We have been given permission to start our group runs again under strict COVID protocols

  • No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run
  • All runners to carry a mask or buff
  • Practice social distancing
  • We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run
  • No personal sign in – ensure the leader ticks you in/out. Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • We will monitor the groups on a weekly basis for size
  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape
  • If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home
  • If you are not comfortable with group running yet, you can use the maps to enjoy the routes in your own time

We chose one of the less technical routes for our first run in 5 months to welcome everyone back.

This Saturday we park at Newlands Forest parking and visit the 3 blockhouses on the slopes of Table Mountain.

Route (see attached map)
We meet at Newlands Forest parking - off Union Avenue (M3). Please try and arrive early as the parking gets very full

From the parking we turn right and run along the jeep track just above Rhodes memorial, we turn left at the intersection at the bottom and then turn right along the path to the Prince of Wales Blockhouse.

Returning to the track, we turn right and carry on, taking the left fork and the zig zags till we see the single track to the left that goes up to the Queen's Blockhouse.

We pass through the blockhouse taking the single track on the other side up to the track that takes us up to the King's Blockhouse

From the King's Blockhouse there are various options to get back to the parking depending on distance and time. (dotted lines on map)

Rendezvous and start time
Meet at
6:55am at Newlands Forest parking. We start running at 7am

Terrain and distance
Degraded jeep track and single track. Flowing undulating running, short uphill to the king's blockhouse

The route is around 9km but there are options to add distance on the way back

Groups
We will split into speed groups and possibly smaller groups as per regulations (keeping each other in sight) - with leaders and sweeps on the morning.

The relaxed group will be confirmed on Friday

Dogs
Please note that  K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top, rain jacket- weather dependent, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.

At this time of year, the weather can change fast. Please make sure that you are carrying the right equipment, enough food and water

ImportantPlease remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.
Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.

See you there!
Liz

Good morning Everyone

Just a reminder that we are still in existence and haven't forgotten you.  But, like most of the organised running groups, we are taking the cautious approach and waiting until the worst of the COVID danger has passed (and regulations allow) before we re-engage the old groups.

So the old format of the emails will not return in full until such time.

So what exactly IS happening?

There have been some fantastic innovations around how we can still form small groups for safety purposes and minimise the COVID dangers by observing the PPE and social distancing protocols.  I will do a better job of investigating these over the coming weeks and months and try and put them out on an abridged version of our email.  For example, I almost missed the wonderful Gone2Gone segment run.  I did miss the Tuesday Trails Van Hunks segment.  But now there is the Tuesday Trails Nek2Nek.  I am sure there are others and I will look into them.  But basically a group will organise an "event" over a Strava segment.  There is a defined period over which you can run the route (e.g. you have a month in which you can do it).  You sign up for it and then run the route whenever you want (preferably with a few mates) and record your effort on Strava.  You submit your result to the group and you go on the results sheet.  Each group is slightly different in terms of rules, signing up and prizes etc.

Further, MATES is also operating and organising on a limited basis, taking great care to minimise risks.

Also, smaller WhatsApp groups have popped up to replace the larger email groups of he pre-COVID era.  Who knows?  Perhaps this is the way forward.  Whatever the future holds, general social media seems to be the way of finding runs you can join up with.

If anyone is organising a run or a Strava-type event and wants to put the details out there on this email, then please just send me the details and I will include them on the weekly email.

Here are some tasters in the meantime:

TUESDAY TRAILS #TT Nek2Nek

This is a 21km Strava segment from Constantia Nek to Kloof Nek, largely along the contour path but taking a diversion over the top of Oppelskop Ridge and Saddle Rock before returning to the contour path.

For full details it is easiest to just search Strava for the TT Nek2Nek or Google it.

The official segment starts at Constantia Nek car park and ends at the Kloof Nek car park.  But at the end, the right thing to do is trot down the road towards the city bowl and have a coffee or two at  Tamboers Winkel in De Lorentz Street (half way down the hill) with your mates.

You will need to do a little car / Uber admin but very well worth it.

MUIZENBERG TRAIL DAWGS (not officially organising their normal runs but are organising some ad hoc small runs via their WhatsApp Group)

  • DUEL WITH THE MULE (finishes Sunday 30 August) – Strava segment https://www.strava.com/segments/24922506)
  • STEVE H'S NOT A RACE CHALLENGE (Starts 9 August at 07h00 and ends 10 August at 18h00) – MATES will be running this on Sunday morning)

For details of how to participate in these runs then search Facebook for the Muizenberg Trail Dawgs group and scroll through the page until you get to their Challenges.  Full details are there.

MATES SUNDAY RUN – 9 AUGUST 2020

That's it for now.  Remember, if you know of any Challenges or runs that need airing and will comply with current safety requirements, let me know and I will pop them onto the email.

Cheers

Tim
