After the usual safety briefing we all made our way up the steps and shortcuts and then onto the overseer’s hut. From here we took Smut’s track and made our way to the dams, across the wall, a quick dip for some and then onto the aqueducts.
We were not disappointed – the red disas were there in full bloom.
The Main group and some of the medium group continued onto the Smuts track, and then back to the cars.
The rest of the medium group and the slow group turned round and returned via ash valley.
The fast group covered 12.8 km in under 3 hours, the medium group between 12.7 and 14 km in 3 hours (some came back via the road) and the slow group managed a similar distance in just over 3 hours.
Congratulations to Lorraine on completing her 100th sortie with the group – and doing this while nursing a sore back. Congratulations to Kevin Morris on his 25th.
Thanks to Neil for looking after the slow group, Julian and co for looking after the speedsters, and our usual committee for looking after the medium bunch.
Thanks to Jo, Liz, Lorraine and Richard for the lovely photos and to Theo for pointing out the only Blue Disa to be seen by the medium/fast group. (More photos to follow.)
