TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: Saturday 5 June 2021 - Skeleton Gorge

Good day Trailers,

Please be aware of our runs under strict COVID protocols

  • No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run
  • All runners to carry a mask or buff
  • Practice social distancing
  • We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run
  • No personal sign in – ensure the leader ticks you in/out. Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • We will monitor the groups on a weekly basis for size
  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape
  • If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home
  • If you are not comfortable with group running yet, you can use the maps to enjoy the routes in your own time

Route
This coming Saturday we'll be getting our boots wet.  From Cecelia Forest parking lot, we will go up the first muddy section of the river, take a right, up a little muddy path to the cycle track and the contour above Kirstenbosch.  Along the contour to Skellies, up to the top.  It is going to be wet.  At the top take a right on Smuts track, left at the aqueduct, down the upper Disa river to the museum, across the dam wall, Ash valley, a bit of concrete, down Spilhaus Ridge, then Rooikat and back to the cars for a well-deserved refreshment.

There are lots of options to short cut the route at the top of Skellies.

Weather

At this stage the forecast is for a cool start at 14 degrees, some high cloud clearing to a BEYOOTIFUL day with very little wind.  There is no rain during the week, but I am hoping that there will still be some water coming down Skeleton.

Rendezvous and start time
Meet at Cecelia Parking lot to start running at 7:30

Terrain and distance
All sorts of terrain – mud, rocks, water, concrete, single track, jeep track, about 12km

Groups
This is a pack run with regular regroups, we will split into 2 speed groups with leaders and sweeps on the morning.

The relaxed group will be confirmed on Friday

Dogs
Please note that  K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top depending on weather, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.

ImportantPlease remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.
Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.

This coming Saturday we'll be doing something different, showing the northern suburbs some love and heading to the Tygerberg Nature Reserve. Please note there is a R20 entrance fee for adults, R10 for students and R10 for pensioners with proof.

Route
The park is not big but we will zig and zag our way around. We will start off dipping down to the right, looping through the Duiker path around the small dam and forest area. Then we head up to the Sentech transmitter which is our highest point. From there I may lean on Geoff to guide us around the long loop down and above Plattekloof. We may add a bit more depending on time and distance. All in all, it will probably be around 10-11km and about 2 hours max.

Rendezvous and start time
The park only opens at 07h30 so meet at 07h20 at the main entrance parking lot, ready to run at 07h30.
Parking lot is at the end of Totius Street, Welgemoed.
Directions are a little complicated (but see below). Best use your GPS and allow 45 minutes from the southern suburbs.

Terrain and distance
Mostly single track and not very technical but can be super slippery as the paths are smooth and hard packed in some places.

Groups
This is a pack run with regular regroups, we will split into 2 speed groups with leaders and sweeps on the morning.

Hi Trailers,

Given that we've had some lovely autumn rain and are expecting more this week, I thought it'd be nice to go chasing waterfalls.

Overview:

We'll be starting at Cecilia Car park and running through the cork forest towards Constantia Nek. From the boom, we take a hairpin turn and head along the contour path as far as the Spilhaus ravine single track, which we'll follow as far as the turn off to Rooikat ravine. From here we'll do an out-and-back as far as the Skeleton Gorge path and head back along the contour path.

The faster group may choose to continue along the contour path for an extra kilometre or two, or even take a climb up Skellies.

The Recovery group (pending confirmation from a Leader by Friday) will follow the same route but may choose to turn back at the bottom of Rooikat.

Terrain:

We'll be on single track and jeep track for the first 4kms and the last, but the middle 4 will be steep steps/single track.

Distance and time:

A total of just over 13 kms distance with ascent of approximately 350m. It's should take approximately 2 hours for the medium group to complete it.

Rendezvous:

Meet at the Cecilia Forest parking area at 6h55 for a 7am start. It's now quite dark at the start so you may want to bring a headlight.

Compulsory kit: weather appropriate clothing; whistle; water; ICE info; and silver blanket.

We regret that we do not allow dogs to join us, no matter how gorgeous and well-behaved.

See you there!

Saturday 15 May 2021 we head to the Republic of Hout Bay for a mix of trail and road.

Route details
Meet at the parking at the bottom of Chappies, by the Velocity Gym.

We warm up with a trot up the road to the start of the trail at East Fort. From the shortcut trail we join the jeep track until we get the split to the higher contour path where we may split into groups, those who don't like heights or don't want the steeper climb can continue along the jeep track.  We all end up at Blackburn Ravine and follow the contour path towards Chapmans Peak.  Along the single track we are treated to magnificent views (weather permitting) across the bay.
At approximately 7km we can decide whether to summit Chapmans Peak or head down to Chapmans Peak drive, popping out by the "ticket checker".  From here we have a leg stretch on the tar(approx 4km) back to our cars.

Please remember this a pack run led by committee, and its important that we look out for each other.

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV in the parking area 06:55 ready to start at 07:00.

Terrain and Distance

A mix of jeep track, single track and tar.

Distance: +- 12 kms taking about 2h00 - 2h30mins for Medium Group (longer if we go up Chapmans Peak)

Fast Group
Will follow a similar route with a possible extension to be decided on the day.

Relaxed Group to be confirmed.

*Please note adjustments to the route may be made whilst running depending on the group and weather conditions.

Please bring:

A whistle, WATER (remember a trail 12km can take longer than a road 12km), a warm & waterproof/windproof top, space blanket and ICE (In case of Emergency) tag or card.

Unfortunately no dogs are allowed on our runs.

FW: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS Saturday 8th May Tokai Forest

Hi Trailers,

Tomorrow's run is ON – see you at 6.50 am ready to start running at 7.00 am – more details below.

Sunrise is at 7.26 am – you might need a headtorch for the first part of the run.  Expect a little bit of rain, so please come prepared.

We will start with a clockwise loop round the lower forest – approx. 4 km, and then make our way up to the Sanparks gate (approx. 1.3 km)  – If we get there too early we may have to do a few hill repeats or some yoga stretches.

Once through the gate there are various options that the groups can take.  See photo attached of a previous route we did (excluding the lower forest loop), or go to  https://www.mapmyrun.com/za/constantia-western-cape/15-99-km-run-in-cape-town-tokai-manor-ra-route-61712028 to see another option.

We will need to stay in groups for safety, and I suggest we run in the upper section for about an hour and then head back down to the cars (you can always do another loop round the lower forest if you haven't got to your weekly mileage yet).  Let's aim to be back at the cars by 9.30 am.

Please be aware that we are in an area loved by cyclists, so please show some respect, and do not run on any of their single tracks.

There will be a walking group tomorrow.

See you in the morning

Gae

Please be aware that our runs operate under strict COVID protocols.

  • No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run
  • All runners to carry a mask or buff
  • Practice social distancing
  • We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run
  • Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe

  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape
  • If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home

This coming Saturday 8th May we will return to Tokai Forest

Start time and RV

We will meet for our briefing and to sign the register at 06:55 to be ready to start running at 07:00 . Please note our will RV the same as last time - at the corner of Orpen Rd and Dennendal Ave [See map]  Park down the Northern side of Dennendal Rd next to the Forest.

Route

The Sanparks cycle gate opens later now, so we will first do a loop through the lower forest and then we will run up the bridal path towards the Arboretum entrance we will make our way up to the various levels.  The exact routes will be decided on Saturday morning as we have a variety of choices.

Terrain and Distance

Gravel tracks and trails with some good climbing sections which may include the "huff n puff" hill and we will try and stay mostly clear of the mountain bikers.  Distances will be more or less 12 km, aiming at approx. 2- 2,5 hours.

Relaxed group/walking group

The route through the lower forest is approx. 4 km, so is ideal for those wanting a brisk walk.  It can also be extended to include a section of the upper forest too.  We will split into various groups on the day, so all groups should be running.

What to bring

Water, whistle, warm, wind or waterproof top depending on weather and your ICE information

Important: Please remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.

Our runs are pack runs and we will therefore regroup as necessary and leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on their own

No Dogs  allowed on our runs.
