TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - Saturday 5th May - Constantia Nek - Vlakkenberg - Manganese Mines - Hout Bay Beach Point-to-Point

Good Morning Trailers!

Quite a few of our intrepid trailers have pushed themselves to their limits this weekend: Liz Brash and Jason & Christine Welthagen have done the 2-day Klipspringer Challenge; Nothemba Mfolozi and Fazlin Martin have taken part in the 3-day African X, and then there was Mmama Kubjane, coming second lady in the Ultra Trail Drakensberg in just under 22 hours. I do hope you wore your TMT t-shirts at the various prize-givings! Congratulations to you all – and to everyone else who participated in a big event whose achievements I may have missed.

While we're talking about achievements, I'd like to congratulate the following regulars on reaching TMT milestones:

·         Neil Garbers              175 sorties
·         Sam Brinkman            75 sorties
·         Marg Tierney              75 sorties
·         Theo Smith                 50 sorties
·         Bonita de Araujo         25 sorties
·         Thomas Andrews        25 sorties

On to this week's run:
I've chosen to take you all on Leg 3 of the Hout Bay Challenge for a pleasant climb followed by a long gentle downhill. It's only 10kms in distance but it's an point-to-point run so you need to allow a little bit of time for car admin.

Rendezvous and Start Time:
6:45am ready to run at 7am- Constantia Nek. Note that we will be finishing at the Vida/Beach car park so if you want to make a plan with friends to take a few cars down to the beach car park, then please get back up to the Nek by 6:55 for sign in. Personally, I'm thinking of Ubering back up at the end of the run after a breakfast smoothie at Vida. You could also run back to your car, of course. ;)
Route and Terrain:
Again this week's run is not very technical so it's a good one for beginners – and for those with tired legs from this weekend. We huff and puff up Vlakkenberg steps and follow the Hoerikwaggo Hiking Trail until we see the path leading to Vlakkenberg Peak. We take this small detour in the shape of a square, returning to the HHT just before the Bokkemanskloof path. We'll meet the tar road, run along it for a few metres and then take the right turn to stop at Picnic Rock for a photo shoot. Then we continue on the flowing HHT all the way to the Manganese Mines and onto Chappies, It's all single track except for the last km which is on Chapman's Peak Drive.

Medium Group: 10-11 km, taking us approximately 1hr 45mins.

Longer Group: I'm going to ask the advice of the Longer Group leaders but I'm looking at the map and thinking Skoorsteenberg (aka Kasteelsberg) for a good leg stretch. To be confirmed on Friday.

Relaxed Group: To be confirmed on Friday.

The small print:
All the usual rules apply with regard to water, warm tops and whistles, as well as space blankets and ICE information
This is a pack run -  not a race - please stay with your group! Please also remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going. Front Runners, wait for the back of your pack to catch their breath before moving on.
Please note no dogs are allowed on our runs.
Look forward to seeing you there.

Fwd: Fw: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: Saturday 28th April 2018: Constantia Greenbelt-Kirstenbosch loop

Good Morning Trailers

This weekend being a long weekend we have chosen a relatively chilled route through the Constantia Greenbelt that will allow us to stretch our legs a bit.

Rendezvous and Start Time:

7:00am - Constantia Sports Complex (parking to the immediate left of the entrance).

Route and Terrain:

We have two routes to pick from depending on the distance you would like to cover.  Neither are very technical so good for beginners or those who just want a good run in the company of mother nature:

Medium Group: 11-12 km, taking us approx 2hrs

Longer Group: 15-16 km, taking us approx 2.5- 3hrs

Both start with a gentle course up the Diepriver Trail Greenbelt to Southern Cross Drive, where we turn right up into Cecilia Forest.
Running towards Kirstenbosch the Longer Group will turn left up onto the contour path.  After spending some time on the contour path turning down Skeleton Gorge and heading back through the Klaasenbosch Greenbelt via Kirstenbosch or Cecilia Forest.
The Medium Group will continue to the Kirstenbosch top gate (if they let us through, otherwise a loop back to Cecilia Forest) to return down Klaasenbosch Greenbelt .

We should miss the majority of parkrun peeps and finish with a nice clean run back to the cars.

The exact route will be decided by the various leaders on the day.

Terrain gentle single track and some jeep track, with occasional crossing of tar so please look out for traffic, mostly undulating surrounded by beautiful flora.  Some parts are also popular with cyclists so our reflexes will be tested.

Relaxed Group will be confirmed on Friday

The small print:

All the usual rules apply with regard to water, warm tops and whistles, as well as space blankets and ICE information.  Winter is coming, do not underestimate the chill factor.

This is a pack run, whilst you may not achieve a PB, good clean fun is included. Please remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.

Important for safety: Stay with your group. Front Runners, wait for the back of your pack to catch their breath before moving on.

Please note no dogs are allowed on our runs.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Regards

Sam

FEEDBACK: Saturday 7th April 2018: Silvermine - The Lookout Circuit

We returned to Silvermine after our Easter/Pesach break for a circuit of the various lookout points, something like this:

We started at the parking area nearest to the reservoir after a slight delay because the leader (ahem!) had a disagreement with her alarm clock and overslept. Fortunately, Liz had printed a register and the group signed in, leaving only the route briefing to be done by a flustered and sleepy-eyed Lorraine.

All three groups headed up the single track to the fire lookout over Tokai Plantation but decided not to continue on up to Elephant's Eye Cave before heading down and across to the Blackburn lookout. Unfortunately, we lost a runner here as she stopped to tie her shoelaces without the main group noticing her absence. Fortunately, the relaxed group was not far behind and scooped her up and stayed with her for the rest of the run.

Theo led the way from here up to Noordhoek Peak finding single track wherever possible, but with some stretches of jeep track, and on to the Noordhoek viewpoint where the group took a lot of photos and enjoyed the 'mini 3 peaks' challenge before rounding off the morning with a circuit of the reservoir.

The Longer distance group led by Geoff and Tim continued a short way along the Old Fisherman's Path towards the entrance gate and returned via the River Walk to add a further 2 kms or so to the run.

The Relaxed group led by Marge took a lower path back from the Blackburn lookout to cut out a big climb and a kilometre or two.

The main group's 11km route took just over 2 hours. The Longer group were already drinking their refreshments in the car park by then, and the relaxed group had gone home!
