Hi Trailers
This week we will be climbing to the highest point on the Cape Peninsular and bagging another of Ryan's 13 peaks!
Please ensure that you have read all the details in the email…
Route details
We park at the Platteklip parking and wind our way up Platteklip Gorge taking in the spectacular views of Cape Town as the sun rises. Once we reach the top and catch our breath, we turn left and make our way to Maclear's Beacon. There are two options here: the left hand path is fairly exposed but beautiful and the right hand path is the normal tourist path that follows the yellow footprints to Maclear's. We celebrate reaching the highest point, take in the views and choose from a variety of paths for the way back.
- Return the same way and descend Platteklip (10kms total)
- For those who don't like descents, return the same way and catch the cable car down and run back along the tar road to the cars (9km total)
- Take Smuts track south from Maclears and return to Platteklip via the Echo Valley path (12km)
Rendezvous and Start Time
RV at the parking at the bottom of Platteklip Gorge along Tafelberg Road at 7:25am ready to start at 7:30am.
Terrain and Distance
Single track and boardwalks with a steep, winding climb and descent. Flowing running at the top.
For those who don't like descents, the cable car is an option. The rate is R190 one way with a 20% discount for MyGreenCard. Tickets must be purchased from webtickets beforehand
The distance will be between 10 and 12kms, depending on route chosen. If you skip Maclear's and turn back at the top of Platteklip, it will be 6kms.
The climb up Platteklip can take a while so this is not a route to do if you have time constraints.
Relaxed Group
There will be a relaxed group.
Please Bring:
A whistle, water, a warm /waterproof/windproof top dependent on weather, space blanket and ICE tag or card. It is often misty, cold and windy at the top of the mountain so it's recommended that you are prepared for anything. Snacks are a good idea.
For safety, it is the responsibility of everyone to check behind you to ensure that the person behind is still there and that they see where you turn off
Unfortunately no dogs allowed on our runs.
Directions to Platteklip Parking:
Go up Tafelberg Road, pass the lower Cable Station and drive for about 1.5kms. You will see parking on your left just before the reservoir on the bend at the start of the trail. Cars can also be parked along the right hand side of the road taking care not to block traffic. Leave nothing of value in the cars.
See you there
Liz
