SEE YOU TOMORROW
This Saturday 5 February 2022 we head to one of my favourites and possibly one of the most underrated runs on the Peninsula – Silvermine East (the side closer to Muizenberg as opposed to the Dam side). The only downside is the late gate opening time.
Rendezvous and Start Time:
Now these instructions need a bit of focus. Although we are running the Eastern section, we are going to park in the car park just inside the Western Gate 1 (which is the entrance on the Dam side). This is because Gate 1 opens at 07h00 whereas Gate 2 only opens at 08h00 (all year round). This car park is also a bit safer from a break-in perspective.
Please be at the Gate 1 by 07h00 at the latest and we will aim to start running at 07h10.
You will need either money for entry fees (R36 per person plus R25 per car) for SA Residents OR valid Wild Card / Green Card (plus ID). If you are not SA resident please check out the other rates below (at the bottom of the email).
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO CELL PHONE RECEPTION AT THE GATE SO IF YOU'RE RUNNING LATE THEN YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO NOTIFY US.
Route details:
We will cut across Ou Kaapseweg to Gate 2 and then turn almost immediately left and ascend the little ravine to the east of Wolfkop. We make our way up to Fat Lady's Cave (not named by me) at the summit of the Higher Steenberg Peak. Hugging the ridgeline we will descend to the aerials at the foot of the Lower Steenberg Peak. If it's not hot, we will scramble up the side of Lower Steenberg Peak and tag that summit too. Then we descend to the path that leads to Muizenberg Peak. We ascend Muizenberg Peak from the easy side and drop down to the top of Farmer Peck's Valley. Then we head across to St James Peak, past Muizenberg Cave to Nellie's Pool. Left at the pool and cross the jeep track and climb to Tartarus Cave and Kalk Bay Peak. We cross the top of Spes Bona Valley and drop down into the Amphitheatre. Then we take the path leading to Cave Peak, down Dead Man's Path, traverse around to the jeep track and then jeep track back to Gate 2, across Ou Kaapseweg and back to the cars for an ICE cold beer.
Please remember this a pack run, and it's important that we look out for each other.
Terrain and Distance:
Mostly single track and some jeep track. Nothing unduly technical or exposed.
Distance: +- 14 kms taking about 2.5 - 3hrs for Medium Group. But there are plenty of short cuts.
There will be a Relaxed Group led by Lorraine which will do a shorter route.
Walking group to be confirmed on Friday.
*Please note adjustments to the route may be made whilst running depending on the group and weather conditions.
Please bring:
A whistle, WATER a warm & waterproof/windproof top, space blanket and ICE (In case of Emergency) tag or card.
There is very little shade on this route so bring extra protection against the sun and extra water
Unfortunately no dogs are allowed on our runs. In any event, dogs are not allowed in this section of Silvermine.
