RE: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - SATURDAY 19 October 2024 Cape Point - Gifkommetjie or Platboom to entrance gate (entrance fee/cards/no cash)

Hi Trailers

Next week we will explore a new route for trailers in Cape Point – starting at Gifkommetjie (13km) or Platboom (17km) and running back to the entrance gate on the Hiking Trail route. Car admin is involved.

We will park just after the entrance gate and jump into one or 2 cars and drive to Gifkommetjie or Platboom for those who want a longer route.

Entrance fee – R100 SA citizens (card/no cash) , green card, wildcard

Route

From the start at Gifkommetjie/Platboom we run on the trail along the coast turning inland about 1,5 km past Gifkommetjie and running to Sirkelsvlei. We go straight past Sirkelsvlei and run to the Olifantsbos tar road. We cross that and go up to Rooihoogte and down to the gate. Walkers can either do the Gifkommetjie loop or start at the gate and walk to Sirkelsvlei and back.

Rendezvous and start time

The Gate opens at 6am officially. We will meet there as close to 6am as possible for briefing and then drive to the start venues. We will try and start as close to 6h30 – 6h45 as possible. Please be early to avoid a long queue

There is no reception so we won't know if you're running late

Terrain & Distance

Mostly single track. Distances estimated.

  • The Gifkommetjie run is around 13km

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - Tokai Forest - 12th October 2024

Evening Trailers

This coming Saturday we will be making a return to Tokai Forest

Rendezvous and start time

We will meet for our briefing and to sign the register at 06:20 ready to start running at 06:30

RV at bottom of the corner of Orpen Rd and Dennendal Avenue, on the corner with the ribbons. Park in Dennendal Rd next to the forest.

 Route

We'll start by crossing the road and running up the bridal path with Forest Glade Estate on our left. Once on Tokai Road turn right and head up past the braai area which heads up to the Manor House. We turn left at the bridge before the Manor House and follow this jeep track until level 2. The track meanders to the left and then to the right. Keep going up until a tree line is reached and here we head right. Once out of the trees take in the views of the back of Table Mountain, Devils Peak and looking east, of the Cape Flats.

Follow level 2 until the track splits into 3 taking the left fork. Keep going until level 3 is reached where we turn right. Follow level 3 until a larger jeep tack is reached that comes up from the Arboretum. Turn right and right again at the next hair pin bend. Head down taking the first turn to the right that runs parallel to level 3.  (This is to avoid cyclists as much as possible).

Run for about 1km where we will turn left at the intersection that takes us back down past the burnt out house where we turn right. This takes us past the Arboretum and Manor House.

Head on down Tokai Road until the intesection with Zwaanswyk Road where we turn left and then double back on the horse track until the braai area fence is reached. Follow this around keeping to the right. This will take you back to Forest Glade Estate fences where we turn left and back to the cars.

Terrain and Distance

Gravel tracks and trails with some good climbing sections.  Distance will be 10-12 km, with the option to do a loop of the Lower Park at the end to add another fast and flat 4km to the distance.

Walking Group to be confirmed on Friday.

What to bring

Water, whistle, warm/windproof top, rain jacket - weather dependent, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.

Please make sure that you are carrying the right equipment, enough food and water.

ImportantPlease remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.  Please keep together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.

PS  Sorry no dogs allowed on VOB runs

See you there

Hi Trailers!

This Saturday we will hit the tar a little as we head up Price Drive to Vlakkenberg Peak, and return via Constantia Nek, Die Hel and the Silverhurst Trail.

Route

We'll park at High Constantia shopping centre and climb the 2km up to the start of the trail on the lung-bursting black mamba that is Price Drive.  The good news is that those of us that completed the Gone4Good challenge this July saw that the trail between the road and the top of the mountain has been nicely tamed and there are friendly steps where there once was a scrambly bit. Once on the mountain, we will hopefully see the stunning ocean of proteas that line the path to the peak itself. Having tagged the peak, we'll head back towards Constantia Nek. At the Nek, we have two choices: either run down the main road and head into Die Hel, popping out on Southern Cross Drive, or running up onto the Contour path and along to the top of Southern Cross Drive, then all the way down the road to the start of the Silverhurst trail.  Unfortunately, there's no way around it.  We have to hit the tar in one form or another.  Choose your poison!

It's a longish run at 12.5kms with little opportunity to shorten it, but if there are a group that want to cover less distance, I think the best would be to turn back at the peak and retrace your steps down Price Drive.

There's a Strava route here:  https://www.strava.com/routes/3275453416281262104

Rendezvous and start time

Meet at High Constantia parking at 6h50 ready to run at 07h00.

Terrain & Distance

Tar, single track, tar, single track, tar, single track 😊.

This is a long route at 12km

What to bring

  • Appropriate clothes for the weather as forecast, a whistle, a space blanket and your ICE information
  • Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • Please ensure that you are carrying personal medication required if suffering from any medical conditions
  • If you are not well, please stay at home

Please note that TMT unfortunately does not allow dogs on its runs.

Kind regards,
