Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: Saturday 27th March - Simon's Town to Smitswinkel (point to point)

Hi, Trailers,

Our run tomorrow is ON.

The predicted weather forecast will be overcast, cool with a light breeze, perfect running weather. Please come prepared.

 See you there at 6:55

Gary Phipson
Cell: 078 998 7687

Please be aware that our runs operate under strict COVID protocols even though now on level 1.

  • No gathering in a big group at the start or end of the run
  • All runners to carry a mask or buff
  • Practice social distancing
  • We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run
  • No personal sign in – ensure the leader ticks you in/out. Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • We will monitor the groups weekly for the size
  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape
  • If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home

This week we will be visiting Simon's Town to Smitswinkel (Smits Trail).

Saturday we will be venturing along a not so used route (for TMT) starting from Simon's Town. This is a point to point route, so there will be some car admin involved. The trail requires a permit from SanParks and permission from the landowner of the private reserve that the path crosses. This has been organised, and each group will need to carry a copy which I will supply at the start, just in case there are rangers on the mountain :-)

SanParks would like us to report any sightings of klipspringers, ideally with photographs.

Route
We start from Jan Smuts drive in Simon's Town and climb up the jeep track which turns into a single track towards the Quarries. Just before the Quarries, we take the path that turns to the left and climb up towards Blockhouse Gap, passing ruins of a Blockhouse. At Blockhouse Gap we take the path to the left to climb to the top of Swartkop. The path continues south towards Smitswinkel, along the top of the Swartkop mountains, and then descends towards the Smitswinkel tented camp and the road to Cape Point, near where the cars are parked at the end. If the fast group needs more distance, there is the option to run back to the start, either on the trail or on the t*r along the coast (approximately 20km if completing the full loop...). There will be around 800m ascent in total on the basic route.

Rendezvous and start time
Meet at
6:55 am at Jan Smuts Drive, Simon's Town (near number 30) ready to start at 7.00 am.

How to get there

Drive through the centre of Simon's Town towards Cape Point. Just after Simon's Town School on the right, and a convenience store on the left, turn right up Harrington Road. Continue to the T junction at the top, and turn left into Jan Smuts drive. Continue along Jan Smuts and the start will be just after number 30 on the right. There should be parking along Jan Smuts, please be considerate when parking and do not block any residents access. Map of the start attached.

The car park at the end of the trail is at Smitswinkel Bay Corner (permit indicates max of 4 vehicles) This is approximately 12 minutes drive (9.3km) from the start. Parking is not permitted at Smits Forestry station or Smits Camp, including driveways.

Terrain and distance
Starting on jeep track, then single track. Uphill start and then undulating with a steepish descent near the end. Around 9,5 - 11km depending on the route chosen. Medium group about 2:45:17. Hikers indicate approximately 5 hours :-)

Groups
This is a pack run with regular regroups, we will split into speed groups with leaders and sweeps in the morning.

There will be a relaxed group that will be hiking the route.

Dogs
Please note that  K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs. The permit also indicates that dogs are not allowed on this trail.

What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top depending on weather, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.

Important

Please remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.
Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.

Many Thanks, and Kind Regards,

Gary Phipson

Hi Trailers,

Please be aware that our runs operate under strict COVID protocols even though now on level 1.

  • No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run
  • All runners to carry a mask or buff
  • Practice social distancing
  • We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run
  • Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • We will monitor the groups on a weekly basis for size
  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape
  • If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home

This week we will be starting from the Hout Bay Beach Car park opposite Chapman's Peak Hotel. Hopefully this is not so full, so we can start at 6h15 am. We may still need torches for the run up the road

Route

From the car park, we run up the Chapman's Peak Drive till we get to the start of East Fort route. We go up this path following the upper contour – with a potential detour to the manganese mines for those who haven't seen them. At the junction with the Blackburn Ravine path/lower contour, we go up Blackburn Ravine to the Hout Bay lookout at the top. From the lookout we turn left up the single track that leads us to Constantiaberg Peak and the mast.

After tagging the peak (one of the 13 peaks), we make a short detour to visit Constantiaberg Cave (Elephant's Bum cave) before retracing our steps down to the lookout and back down Blackburn ravine taking the lower contour this time.

Rendezvous and start time

Meet at Hout Bay beach car park ready to start running at 6:15am. Please arrive early for check-in and safety briefing. Remember to bring a torch for the run up the road.

Terrain & Distance

The route starts and ends with a bit of tar and jeep track but is mostly single track. It is not a long route distance-wise (+-12km) but it is around 900m up and 900m down.

There are turnaround points for those who don't want to go the whole way:

  • At the junction of the upper and lower contours, you can turn back down along the lower contour – around 8km
  • At the lookout at the top of Blackburn Ravine, you can turn back down – around 10km

If the weather is kind to us, it is really worth going to the top and the descent is a great run!

What to bring

Water, whistlea space blanket and your ICE information. Please bring a headlamp or torch for the first bit on the road as we will be running in the half-light.

As the first 6km is a climb, snacks are a good idea

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof/warm gear. Constantiaberg and the lookout can be a whole different weather pattern!

Please note that TMT unfortunately does not allow dogs on its runs.

Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - SATURDAY 13TH MARCH 2021 - VLAKKENBERG - THE MISSING 14TH PEAK!

Hi Everyone!

Our run tomorrow is confirmed.

We're looking at a nice cool start with sunrise at 6:44, so please remember your headlamps for the first few minutes as we run down Hout Bay Main Road.

See you at the Nek at 05:50 or so.

This week we will be visiting Vlakkenberg Peak, which is not included in the now famous list of 13 Peaks but is definitely a Peak according to my map.

Route

Instead of the leg-deadening uphill slog behind the Silvermist restaurant, we'll start our run more gently by heading a little further down the main road until we see the pipe track on our left.  We'll head up and along the gently undulating jeep track, all the way along behind the houses until we reach the turn up into Bokkemanskloof.  Here we'll climb the mountainside between the cool vegetation and pop out on the plateau at the top.

From here we'll hang a right at Wrong Way Rock toward Picnic Rock for the customary group photo. Here, the longer, faster group may decide to run on towads the Manganese Mines - a stunning trail that meanders along quite levelly, forming part of the Hoerikwaggo Trail. The medium group will make their way back towards the Nek, but must be sure not to miss the turn-off from the main trail to visit Vlakkenburg Peak itself. It's a 500m path out and back. In fact, Slingsby shows a second path that we have never managed to find but would offer us a lovely loop out to the peak.

The final section is down the steep descent behind Silvermist restaurant, and back to the cars.

Rendezvous and start time

Meet at Constantia Nek car park ready to start running at 6:00am. Please arrive early for check-in and safety briefing. Parking has been very limited there recently.

Terrain & Distance

This route is made up of jeep track, a tiny bit of tar, single track, and steps. The longer group will cover about 11-12km if they go all to way to the Manganese Mines, and the medium group roughly 8-9kms. It should take us 2 to 2.5 hours.

What to bring

Water, whistlea space blanket and your ICE information. Please bring a headlamp or torch for the first half an hour as we will be running down the main road in the half-light.

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof gear.

Fwd: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: Saturday 6 March 2021 - 3 Blockhouses Run

Good day fellow trailers!

Tomorrow's run is ON.  Meet at 06h00 at Newlands Forest fire base parking. We start running at 06h10.  Due to the early start feel free to begin the run with the head torch.
The weather looks great for running with a cool 17-19 degrees during our session. Very little wind.

Good news is that there will be a relaxed group with the mediums, so if you have not got out on the trails much this year, please come along.

See you tomorrow.

A fairly easy and less technical run this week.

This Saturday we park at Newlands Forest parking and visit the 3 blockhouses on the slopes of Table Mountain.

Route (see attached map)
We meet at Newlands Forest parking - off Union Avenue (M3). Please try and arrive early as the parking gets very full

From the parking we turn right and run along the jeep track just above Rhodes memorial, we turn left at the intersection at the bottom and then turn right along the path to the Prince of Wales Blockhouse.

Returning to the track, we turn right and carry on, taking the left fork and the zig zags till we see the single track to the left that goes up to the Queen's Blockhouse.

We pass through the blockhouse taking the single track on the other side up to the track that takes us up to the King's Blockhouse

From the King's Blockhouse there are various options to get back to the parking depending on distance and time. (dotted lines on map)

Rendezvous and start time
We are still taking advantage of the summer morning light and also aware of the parking frenzy at the fire base. Meet at
6:00am at Newlands Forest parking. We start running at 6.10 am sharp (feel free to start the run with the head torch for the initial few km's)

Terrain and distance
Degraded jeep track and single track. Flowing undulating running, short uphill to the king's blockhouse

The route is around 11km but there are options to add distance on the way back

Groups
We will split into speed groups according to numbers. We are also trying to encourage the relaxed group to commence again!  Leaders will sweep on the morning.

Dogs
Please note that  K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top, rain jacket- weather dependent, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.

At this time of year, the weather can change fast. Please make sure that you are carrying the right equipment, enough food and water

ImportantPlease remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.
Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.

See you there!

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS: Saturday 6 March 2021 - 3 Blockhouses Run

Hi Trailers!

Please be aware of our runs under strict COVID protocols even though now on level 1.

  • No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run
  • All runners to carry a mask or buff
  • Practice social distancing
  • We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run
  • No personal sign in – ensure the leader ticks you in/out. Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • We will monitor the groups on a weekly basis for size
  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape
  • If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home
  • If you are not comfortable with group running yet, you can use the maps to enjoy the routes in your own time

A fairly easy and less technical run this week.

This Saturday we park at Newlands Forest parking and visit the 3 blockhouses on the slopes of Table Mountain.
