Hi Trailers,
Please be aware that our runs operate under strict COVID protocols even though now on level 1.
- No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run
- All runners to carry a mask or buff
- Practice social distancing
- We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run
- No personal sign in – ensure the leader ticks you in/out. Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
- We will monitor the groups on a weekly basis for size
- VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape
- If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home
This week we will be visiting Vlakkenberg Peak, which is not included in the now famous list of 13 Peaks but is definitely a Peak according to my map.
Route
Instead of the leg-deadening uphill slog behind the Silvermist restaurant, we'll start our run more gently by heading a little further down the main road until we see the pipe track on our left. We'll head up and along the gently undulating jeep track, all the way along behind the houses until we reach the turn up into Bokkemanskloof. Here we'll climb the mountainside between the cool vegetation and pop out on the plateau at the top.
From here we'll hang a right at Wrong Way Rock toward Picnic Rock for the customary group photo. Here, the longer, faster group may decide to run on towads the Manganese Mines - a stunning trail that meanders along quite levelly, forming part of the Hoerikwaggo Trail. The medium group will make their way back towards the Nek, but must be sure not to miss the turn-off from the main trail to visit Vlakkenburg Peak itself. It's a 500m path out and back. In fact, Slingsby shows a second path that we have never managed to find but would offer us a lovely loop out to the peak.
The final section is down the steep descent behind Silvermist restaurant, and back to the cars.
Rendezvous and start time
Meet at Constantia Nek car park ready to start running at 6:00am. Please arrive early for check-in and safety briefing. Parking has been very limited there recently.
Terrain & Distance
This route is made up of jeep track, a tiny bit of tar, single track, and steps. The longer group will cover about 11-12km if they go all to way to the Manganese Mines, and the medium group roughly 8-9kms. It should take us 2 to 2.5 hours.
What to bring
Water, whistle, a space blanket and your ICE information. Please bring a headlamp or torch for the first half an hour as we will be running down the main road in the half-light.
Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof gear.
Please note that TMT unfortunately does not allow dogs on its runs.
