Subject: FW: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - SATURDAY 1 MAY 2021: KASTTELPOORT TO MACLEARS BEACON VIA VALLEY OF RED GODS AND ECHO VALLEY

Hi Trailers,

As Saturday is a holiday, we have a longer run planned. We will be starting from Theresa Avenue in Camps Bay and running up to Maclears beacon and back. There is a shorter option

Route

From Theresa Avenue, we wind our way up the jeep track taking the shortcut to the bottom of Kasteelpoort. We go up Kasteelpoort and turn left to go through the Valley of the Red Gods, straight through the cross roads at Echo Valley and up to the top of Platteklip. Here we turn right to Maclears – either along the normal track or along the edge of the mountain. After tagging Maclears (one of the 13 peaks) we go south from the beacon down Smuts Track till we reach the Echo Valley turnoff. We turn right and run through the valley. At the first cross road, we turn left and run along the path overlooking the dams. Once reaching the path we turn right and make our way back to Kasteelpoort to get down and back to the cars

Rendezvous and start time

Meet at Theresa Avenue, Camps Bay ready to start running at 6h45am. Please arrive early for parking, check-in and safety briefing. Remember to bring a torch for the run up the jeep track.

Terrain & Distance

The route starts and ends with jeep track but is mostly single track. It is a long route time-wise as there is a fair amount of climbing.

There is a shortcut for those who don't want to go the whole way:

  • After going through the Valley of the Red Gods, you can turn right along Echo Valley at the first cross road and right again at the second cross road which will take you along the path overlooking the dams. Turn right and make your way back to Kasteelpoort

What to bring

Water (enough for a longer time out), whistlea space blanket and your ICE information. Please bring a headlamp or torch for the first bit on the jeep track as we may be running in the half-light.

Please check the weather before you set off from home and pack the appropriate waterproof/warm gear. The top of the mountain can be a whole different weather pattern!

Directions to Theresa Ave:

From the city: pass the turn off to the cable station and go down the hill towards Camps Bay. Turn left at the 3rd left turn (Fiskaal road) and follow this road up the mountain – it becomes Francolin and then morphs into Theresa Ave. Park near the hiking entrance to the mountain on your left as you go up to the top of the hill. Parking may be scarce… Don't block driveways or obscure anything as parking tickets are prolific and expensive!

Please note that TMT unfortunately does not allow dogs on its runs.

Please be aware that our runs operate under strict COVID protocols even though now on level 1.

  • No gathering in a big group at start or end of the run
  • All runners to carry a mask or buff
  • Practice social distancing
  • We will break into small groups as per regulations while we run
  • Please carry emergency contact numbers in your bag or on your wrist/shoe
  • We will monitor the groups on a weekly basis for size
  • VOB reserves the right to stop TMT if the COVID infections increase again in the Western Cape
  • If you have any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms, please stay at home
